Collaboration with WHO/Europe: Official start of new project announced

Two-day training courses within the framework of the two-year project “Using the “Learning Health System” approach to Foster Healthy Ageing through Rehabilitation” started at Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU).

Within the framework of the project, research will be conducted in the field of healthy aging in Armenia. Also, a series of training will be held by leading specialists from the University of Lucerne, Switzerland; they will enable the trainees to get acquainted with a comprehensive introduction to the Health policy and systems research (HPSR) in the context of the rehabilitation sector. The aim is to provide the participants with basic knowledge and skills to understand, analyze, and influence health policy and systems that affect rehabilitation services.

Representatives of various fields, including healthcare, social and education sectors are participating in the program.

The participants were welcomed by ASPU Vice-Rector for Human Resources Management and International Cooperation Marianna Harutyunyan, who emphasized the implementation of the project in Armenia given the ongoing reforms in the country and the requirements set forth by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The training courses will be accompanied by interactive lectures and presentations, case study analyses, group discussions and activities, practical exercises.

The ASPU official added that there will be six in-person and ten online training sessions, which will be assessed based on the results of participation in group discussions and assignments, and online tests. Participants will earn one credit for each training session. Certificate of participation will be issued by the University of Lucerne and ASPU upon the completion.

The project participants were also welcomed by Dr. Dima Touhami, the coordinator of the project, a postdoctoral researcher in the field of Rehabilitation and Healthy Aging at the University of Lucerne. The latter's activity is aimed at strengthening health systems.

Dima Touhami said that during the two-day training, they will provide rich materials on the topic. The Doctor hopes that the participants will, in turn, share their experiences and learn from each other. Speaking about the partnership with ASPU Dima Touhami said that the training program is an integral part of the process.

Four sessions were held on the first day of the training, which focused on the definition of the HPSR, its evolutionary development and guiding principles, importance in rehabilitation, six 6 main components of health systems and their role in overcoming health inequalities, as well as the social determinants of health.

The sessions were followed by practical work: with the help of an exercise about the discrimination in healthcare, the participants discussed discrimination in access to rehabilitation services in different situations. The first day of the training was concluded with a presentation of key ideas.

The two-day training on applying the “Learning Health System” approach to promote healthy aging through rehabilitation will continue tomorrow.

The main focus will be the practical use and future directions of the HPSR, methods for restoration, formulation of research questions. At the end of the training, the participants will discuss the main ideas, proposals and action plans for new developments and challenges of the HPSR.
