“Cock-A-Doodle-Doo,” a comedy by Professor Aida Hovhannisyan, was premiered at the Faculty of Culture of Armenian State Pedagogical University today. It featured second-year students of the Television Directing Department.
“Romeo and Juliet,” one of the most popular plays of William Shakespeare, received a new life and interpretation thanks to the efforts of Professor Aida Hovhannisyan, the director of the performance.
The events in the play written by the renowned playwright take place nowadays. Unlike the original version where Verona is chosen as the city of love, the events develop in an ordinary hencoop, while the heroes are chickens and cocks.
The characters of the play are not traditional either. Two Romeos are fighting at a time to win Juliet’s heart while the relatives, neighbours and godfather are raising a hue and cry over the issue.
The end of the play re-written by Professor Aida Hovhannisyan is as unexpected as the entire plot: the rich Romeo, who pays more for love, wins in the end.
“Students were given a difficult task. They were to convey the main idea [of the play] to the audience in the comedy genre and without a word. Even a professional actor will face difficulties in acting in that genre. I have some observations. Anyway, the result is satisfactory and the feedback is binding,” she said.
Talking to old.aspu.am, Harutyun Gevorgyan, who played the role of poor Romeo, said it was the first time he had acted in a performance.
The student is impressed: the role seemed easy but he had difficulty in acting.
Mariam Janikyan, who played the role of Juliet, said that she fell in love with the character and tried to be as natural as possible on the stage. She thinks the audience will like the play and love will always win in life.
Director Vahe Shaverdyan, who attended the premiere of the comedy, advised developing the main idea, assuring everyone that it would become an ideal performance over time.
