A New MA Programme

The newly established Linguistic Research Laboratory of the Pedagogical University organized a round -table discussion on the topic of studying linguistic terms.

The Heads of Chairs of Armenian Language, History of Armenian Language, and General Linguistics of humanitarian universities of Armenia and Artsakh discussed the current state and perspectives of studying linguistic terms, the state of learning linguistic terms in higher education system, as well as discussed the new programme for Master’s Degree compiled by the Head of the Laboratory Lalik Khachatryan, called “System of Linguistic Terms”
The ASPU Vice-Rector for Educational and Scientific Affairs Srbouhi Gevorgyan welcomed the initiative of the Laboratory and expressed her hope for it to give a chance for the field specialists to present various approaches and justifications. Likewise, the Vice-Rector noticed that the submitted programme was very important for the professional framework, and that the suggestions made by those present would serve as a ground for the developments in the sphere of linguistics.

The President of the Pedagogical University’s Board of Trustees, Associate Professor Davit Gyurjinyan welcomed the initiative of having such a laboratory in the University, which would make an asset in the sphere of higher education.

Besides, in his opinion, certain traditional principles could be observed in the draft MA programme of “System of Linguistic Terms”, however further discussions would give a chance for the new programme to be delivered in a new way.

“I wish for future teachers, translators, typologists to be familiar with the world linguistic trends; it is well needed as it is as fast -moving era”.

Moreover, Davit Gyurjinyan assures that only by learning the university material, an HEI graduate will not be able to teach effectively; they should know ten times more to be able to deliver the normative grammar school textbook in various forms. Besides, according to Associate Professor Gyurjinyan, the perception of linguists should also be changed, and a professional linguist and a lecturer should first and foremost be good researchers, and then scientists, and finally students.

“We are all teachers, despite the level we are developing our activities on. Introducing a new programme, a new course on both school and university levels should be aimed at only one goal- to have progressed and well-educated generation”, mentioned the Head of Linguistic Research Laboratory, Professor of the Chair of Armenian Language and its Teaching Methodology after Ararat Gharibyan Mr. Lalik Khachatryan.

Speaking about the necessity of creating a course of linguistic terms Professor Khachatryan highlighted that pupils or students know only the core of the meaning of a term, which is in fact very little. Lalik Khachatryan hoped that with the help of his colleagues’ suggestions and observations it would be possible to draft up the final version of the programme, which would have both theoretical and practical composites, testing questionnaires, bibliography, etc.

And last but not least, during their speeches the Heads of Chairs of Armenian Language, History of Armenian Language, and General Linguistics of humanitarian universities of Armenia and Artsakh highlighted the importance of founding the laboratory and emphasized that joining the Armenian studies and linguistics would bring up a more positive outcome. As well as, each of the counterpart promised that they would do their best in their spheres to support the studies of linguistic terms, after which they presented their observations in regards with the draft programme, shared with certain approaches and made suggestions in regards with specifically adding historical terminology , to define the margins of the course, thematic distribution, etc.
