ASPU Academic Council approves 2019 budget estimates

The ASPU Academic Council held a yearend meeting on December 27. The extended meeting was attended by members of the teaching staff and students.
ASPU Rector Ruben Mirzakhanyan presented the work carried out in 2018, the number of students studying at ASPU and the financial situation of the educational institution conditioned by the number of students, as well as the reasons for tuition rise starting from the next academic year.
The rector emphasized enrolment of international students in the next academic year. In that context, he stressed the role of the University Chairs which, he said, should start translating curricula and lists of specialties.

"The Pedagogical University is faced with a serious competition within the university system, therefore we should use the advanced teaching methods as much as possible,” Mr. Mirzakhanyan said. He added that Google Classroom, a free online learning platform, is a major advantage for attracting applicants from abroad.

The Rector assured everyone that the University will continue its student-centered policy in the next academic year thereby enabling students to communicate with students from other universities, be part of global developments and events and be more literate.

During the yearend meeting, the rector also presented the distribution and dynamics of cash inflows and outflows, total student numbers by years, distribution of cash flows in 2019 and the 2019 budget estimate which was approved by the Council.

Scientific Achievements Presented

Kamo Vardanyan, Head of the ASPU Research Centre, presented the academic achievements of 2018 when speaking about the execution of scientific workflows and implementation of scientific activities financed by the State Committee of Science (SCS) of the RA Ministry of Education and Science.

Summing up the results of international grants programmes, as well as laboratory activities financed by the SCS of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Pedagogical University, Kamo Vardanyan dwelt on the training of the teaching staff in ASPU and other universities.

Among the activities carried out in 2018, Mr. Vardanyan singled out organization of international conferences, study of 41 criminal cases, materials published in peer-reviewed periodicals, creation of a master theses database, etc. Kamo Vardanyan presented the work done by the Centre in 2018, outlining the major activities planned for 2019.

Kamo Vardanyan particularly hailed the inclusion of ASPU's “Wisdom” scientific journal in the “Scopus” peer-reviewed scientific database saying it was a great scientific achievement not only for the University but also for the country. The creation of the database made it possible to avoid repetition of thesis topics. He also stressed the importance of enrolling international students in the University's postgraduate courses.

The Council decided that the University should continue to participate in grant competitions to be announced by the State Committee of Science of the Ministry of Education and Science which will allow the University to receive scientific and technical contract (thematic) financing from the state budget and enhance the effectiveness of scientific activity.

Current Issues

During the year-end meeting, the Academic Council approved the decision to dissolve the Preparatory Department and to open a scientific and methodological centre for Natural Sciences.
Mher Melik-Bakhshyan, ASPU Vice-Rector for Education Process Planning and Organization, presented for approval tuition fees for distance learning Master’s degree programmes for 2019-2020 academic year, tuition fees intended for international students who will study in ASPU in the same academic year, as well as the regulations of the Research and Multimedia Laboratory.

According to tradition, Rector Ruben Mirzakhanyan congratulated all those who were born in December and bestowed the academic rank of Associate Professor on Sona Davtyan, Knarik Abrahamyan, Armine Baghdasaryan, Knarik Uzunyan, Aghvan Mkhitaryan, Davit Poghosyan and Armine Mikaelyan.

At the end of the meeting, Mr. Mirzakhanyan congratulated everyone on the upcoming holidays. “May 2019 be a year of creative achievements, well-being and family happiness,” he said.
