ASPU, British Council sign MoC

On October 9, ASPU hosted Mr. John Gallagher, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Republic of Armenia, Addeh Hovasapian, Director of the British Council Armenia Office, and Mariam Arzumanyan, Projects Coordinator at the British Council Armenia.

ASPU Rector Srbuhi Gevorgyan emphasized the importance of the meeting, the guests' interest in the education sector, implementation of joint programs and trainings, which she said, will be a new standard for ensuring quality education.

Later on, a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) was signed between ASPU and the British Council. The document was signed by Srbuhi Gevorgyan and Addeh Hovasapian.

The ASPU rector expressed hope that the MoC will ensure a long-term rather than temporary cooperation, and the joint programs will contribute to the professional achievements of educators, formation of new knowledge, abilities and skills.

Srbuhi Gevorgyan reminded that the University trains teachers. "It is education that models and builds the future, forms a value system. The United Kingdom continues to have a leading role in the world, and the British Council has a great contribution and experience in terms of transferring innovations of the education system aimed at improving teaching skills. Therefore we value our cooperation and this process that will allow transferring knowledge and abilities to future generations,” she said.

John Gallagher hopes cooperation with ASPU will be effective. He agrees that the educational component is the most important contribution that the United Kingdom can have in Armenia, thereby contributing to the development of the country (Armenia).

John Gallagher says the Pedagogical University is the university that should have its crucial role in a number of programs. Teachers should acquire skills and abilities that will further contribute to the country’s development and prosperity: they should realize that important mission too.

Addeh Hovasapian thanked the ASPU representatives for validating the cooperation. He stressed that the British Council has had a great contribution to the development of English studies in Armenia through education, art and training. He underlined the importance of the programs implemented jointly with ASPU and the expansion of cooperation. “The Future English program aims to provide research and insight, drive innovation in education systems, and support the continuous professional development of English language teachers. I think we will meet again in 6 months to celebrate the success and achievements ASPU students will have within the framework of the program," Addeh Hovasapian said.

Mariam Arzumanyan, spoke about the 6-month program that will be introduced at ASPU from October and the content of the online platform for teachers.

The program will allow teachers to access the resources related to the British Council and the UK's ELT sector. Regular meetings and webinars with facilitators trained by the British Council, as well as forums and discussions are envisaged by the program.

Tigran Mikayelyan, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, said in turn that cooperation with the British Council and joint initiatives have brought qualitative changes.
The chair has discussed and decided to include the program in the curriculum.
