Hasmik Simonyan, an anthropologist and a researcher at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, delivered a lecture at ASPU on May 12.
During the meeting with professors and students of the Faculty of History and Social Sciences, Hasmik Simonyan presented the bioarchaeological methods of studying anthropology collections and the outcomes of the study of archaeology collections in Armenia in the Iron Age.
The speaker stressed that the anthropological studies were carried out using the latest modern methods, by studying all biological remains that had been found. The purpose of the studies is to further strengthen archaeological interpretations and offer new perspectives for exploring past cultural realities.
The scientist emphasizes the study of anthropological materials. "Excavation and the analysis of materials obtained from it was the only method of studying ancient civilizations. Who created the societies? How did those people think and live? What was their life span? What diseases did they have? What was the probable cause of their death? At what age did they die? Bioarchaeology as an archaeology discipline tries to answer all these questions,” she said.
Hasmik Simonyan added that together with the RA Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports they are implementing an awareness training program to inform schoolchildren about the profession, because there is a shortage of specialists in the field.
The lecture was followed by an interesting a discussion with the participants asking the guest a number of questions they were interested in.
