On April 5, students and lecturers of the Faculty of Culture hosted famous cameraman Levon Atoyants.
Sergo Yeritsyan, Professor of the Chair of TV and Radio Journalism, introduced the guest describing him as a live legend of Armenian cinema. He presented the cameraman’s biography and activity and stressed that Levon Atoyants' name has an important and invaluable role in the Armenian cinematography.
The meeting with the distinguished cameraman was held in a question-and-answer format. Students were interested in every detail and nuance of his films, starting from ridiculous episodes involving famous actors to professional secrets.
“Mher Mkrtchyan was an educated and literate person, a high-quality actor. Everything was easy with him. All his roles were successful and expected,” Mr. Atoyants said. He also spoke about other popular actors, film directors and cameramen.
The conversation with the cameraman was occasionally interrupted by film viewing and memories from the set.
“For the first time in life, I cried when I found the camera battery had run out. For a cameraman, there is nothing crueler than that,” Levon Atoyants said recalling details from the filming location in the village of Gogaran after the earthquake.
The cameraman, who participated in the shooting of numerous films, confessed that he loved to shoot black and white movies and bring documentaries closer to feature films.
“I was fortunate enough to work with famous directors and actors. I feel pity that today people shoot films only for money,” Mr. Atoyants said adding that it is also important not to forget the pioneers of Armenian cinema.
The honoured cameraman added that he has not shot the movie of his dreams yet. “In those years, there was no freedom even in films. It is a pity that today freedom is being taken in a different direction,” he said.
The meeting was organized on the initiative of the Chair of TV and Radio Journalism and the Chair of Artistic Photography.
