ASPU Hosts Republican Student Conference

A republican student conference entitled "Armenia: From the Depths of Ages to the Future" was held jointly by the Student Scientific Society of the Faculty of History and Social Sciences and “Erebuni” Historical and Archeological Reserve-Museum.

Mariam Ispiryan, ASPU Vice Rector for Educational and Academic Affairs, stressed the importance of the initiative․ The conference dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the University is meant for students and has an important place among the regularly organized conferences, she said.

The vice-rector notes that it is no secret that the University has always pursued a student-centered policy. It is important to hear students’ opinion on different topics, including the content.

"A university breathes if, in addition to active educational life, it also has active scientific activity. We, historians, like to value the past and look to the future. In these fateful days [for us] evaluation of the heritage of the past is doubly important, especially when its authors are students, "said Edgar Hovhannisyan, Dean of the Faculty of History and Social Sciences. Lessons from history could stop us from making the same old mistakes, he added.

Mr. Hovhannisyan is sure that many of the University students will love science, will dedicate their lives to science in the future.

The republican student conference was attended by students from ASPU, YSU, representatives of "Erebuni" "Shengavit" branches of the museum-reserve.

In their reports, the conference participants referred to the ideology of Garegin Nzhdeh, French archaeologist Jacques de Morgan’s research and excavations in Armenia, defense battles of Van, Zvartnots, and the cause of destruction of St. Gregory temple in Zvartnots.

The students also spoke about the status of Artsakh, Taliban movement, comparative analysis of the Holocaust and the Armenian Genocide, description of St. Karapet Church, etc.

Prof․ Samvel Poghosyan, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of History and Social Sciences for Science and International Cooperation, considers the conference to be an important move aimed at engaging students in science.

From the very beginning we should instill [among students] love for science and potential, which will encourage them to make great scientific achievements.

Vahe Sargsyan, Deputy Director at "Erebuni" Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve, expressed hope that the joint initiative will become a new forge, a bridge to science. "The conference organized within the framework of events marking the 100th anniversary of ASPU has a significant meaning. It re-evaluates the important mission of the Pedagogical University - both in the past and in the future.”

An interesting discussion was held afterwards which was followed by a Q&A session.
