ASPU hosts seminar-discussion dedicated to anniversary of Spitak earthquake

The Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) hosted staff members of the Department for Activities with the Population of the Seismic Protection Territorial Service at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geography held a seminar-discussion, which was part of the day of remembrance of the victims of earthquake and disaster resistance (dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the devastating Spitak earthquake) and was attended by pupils of Basic School #2 after Khachatur Abovyan.

Within the scope of the topic “Earthquakes and the Lessons from Spitak”, Head of the Education Division of the Seismic Protection Territorial Service Syuzanna Kakoyan and Chief Specialist Haykanush Yesayan touched upon the riskiness of Armenia which is in the seismic zone, the country’s seismic activity, the Survey’s activities aimed at creating a safe environment and the state of housing.

The intensity of earthquakes and the differences in terms of magnitude, seismic risk, the activities for assessment and reduction of risk, the types of forecasts and other topics were also discussed.
Touching upon the devastating Spitak earthquake, Syuzanna Kakoyan emphasized the need for and importance of being informed.

The speaker assured that the Service attaches importance to the activities aimed at enhancing skills in showing resistance to the disasters caused by an earthquake and the epistemological and behavioral skills on a daily basis.

According to her, the seminar-discussion at the ASPU is for reducing the seismic risk, a major component of which is raising the level of awareness of the population, training, knowledge of rules of conduct in order not to repeat the same mistakes based on the practices in the world and at the local level, as well as to enhance the necessary knowledge and skills.
