ASPU joins International Museum Day celebrations

The Museum of History of Armenian State Pedagogical University has joined the events organized within the framework of the International Museum Day (IMD).

IMD was first established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) on May 18, 1977, and has since become a global event celebrated by museums and cultural institutions in more than 150 countries, including Armenia.

In 2023, under the slogan "Museums, sustainability and wellbeing", IMD focuses on global health and wellbeing, climate action and life on Earth, once again reaffirming the critical role of museums in the sustainable development of communities and formation of a prosperous society.

ASPU Vice-Rector Naira Safaryan says to ensure sustainability and wellbeing in the present and in the future, one should be familiar with the pages of the past. To this end, three exhibitions will be held in the University Museum this year – "History through Modern Eyes", "Eternal Abovyan", "Akhtamar Church (the Church of the Holy Cross) -the Architectural Jewel of Armenia in the 10th century.”

The vice-rector says it was no accident that rich material and facts about Armenian writer Khachatur Abovyan's life and activity was presented during the joint exhibition with Khachatur Abovyan House-Museum. This year, it will be 175 years since Khachatur Abovyan disappeared, besides, it will be 75 years since ASPU was renamed after the Great Enlightener (Khachatur Abovyan).

Syuzanna Khojamiryan, Director of Khachatur Abovyan House-Museum who is a graduate of ASPU, hailed the initiative, stressing that the joint exhibition is another opportunity to strengthen the inseparable partnership between the two institutions.

She says the exhibition conveys the message of an educator’s immortality. The materials about Khachatur Abovyan's disappearance are especially noteworthy, she stressed.

In order to feel Abovyan's breath, Syuzanna Khojamiryan advised the attendees to visit Khachatur Abovyan House-Museum often, and suggested the ASPU leadership to restore the tradition of holding the swearing-in ceremony of ASPU freshmen.

Emphasizing the effectiveness of cooperation between the two institutions in question, Director of the ASPU Museum Alvard Grigoryan, gave Syuzanna Khojamiryan “Ascent of Ararat” - a book by Associate Professor Ashot Ajamoghlyan and important archival documents with the same name.

“It was a pleasure to return to my alma mater where I spent my years of study. The two structures (ASPU Museum and Khachatur Abovyan House-Museum) have a good experience of long-term and multidisciplinary collaboration. I am glad that even today many of ASPU graduates are joining the ranks of our employees," said Artavazd Zakyan, Deputy Director of the “Service for Protection of Historical Environment and Cultural Museum-reservations” SNCO.

In the context of current realities, underscored the importance of the exhibition "Akhtamar Church (the Church of the Holy Cross) -the Architectural Jewel of Armenia in the 10th century” saying it will help recognize, love and appreciate the historical and cultural heritage of the country in a new way.

ASPU Professor Ashot Piliposyan helped the participants of the exhibition in that regard, presenting a number of interesting facts about the topic.

The professor says International Museum Day a real holiday for all those who love and visit museums.

At the same time, he hopes that the history of Akhtamar Church and the interpretations of architectural compositions will help love and cherish the monuments of the small Armenia.
