Twelve lecturers of the ASPU Faculty of Philology are undergoing a training course within the framework of a media literacy programme organized by the Media Initiatives Center (MIC).
During the five–day training course, the lecturers develop and obtain numerous skills. They learn how to get oriented in the current information field, not to be cheated or deceived, find the necessary information, distinguish between fake and real news, understand media, access, analyze evaluate and criticize media, etc.
Theoretical, methodological and training materials, lesson plans, discussions, question and answer sessions… During the training, the lecturers of the Faculty of Philology tried to reveal [with the help of leading specialists of the sector] the media field in Armenia and in the world, forms, ethics and norms to distinguish between facts and opinions.
Talking to old.aspu.am, Lusine Grigoryan, a media literacy project coordinator at the MIC, said they have been training teachers and lecturers for several years now with the aim of spreading media literacy in the country’s education sector as is the case in a number of countries.
“The trainees are specialists in their spheres but they have only general knowledge of media literacy. “This is something new for them which will enable them to follow the media in a new light, with vigilance and attention,” she said.
Lusine Grigoryan added that more training courses would be organized in the future as a future educator must be armed with media literacy skills. “Our objective is not to have only literate consumers, but also to have educators who are armed with media knowledge of media and can transfer their knowledge to future generations,” she said.
On behalf of the trainees, Dean of the Faculty of Philology Ashot Galstyan stressed the importance of the training course and assured everyone that the skills and knowledge acquired during the course would be applied in the educational process.
