Recently, four lecturers of Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) participated in the International Plein Air in Nida, Lithuania. The Armenian delegation was led by Professor Pharaon Mirzoyan, Head of the Chair of Fine Arts at ASPU.
The event was attended by painters from Armenia, India, Poland, Germany, Serbia, Belarus and Russia.
For several days, Armenian and foreign painters worked and painted in the resort town full of attractions and ports. Their works were later exhibited at the Agila Cultural Centre.
Pharaon Mirzoyan says international plein air initiatives are a unique opportunity to get acquainted with the art of different countries and use their features in one’s own works. The successful experience of an international plein air event organized at the Pedagogical University last year was a real opportunity for organizing similar outdoor paintings in different countries.
“Contact with foreign painters, discussion of the development of modern art in European countries will give the desired result in an artist’s creative life,” Pharaon Mirzoyan said to old.aspu.am. He added that the ASPU lecturers, who travelled to Lithuania to participate in the international plein air, would draw conclusions and share the knowledge they acquired during the event with ASPU students through lectures and with art lovers through their works.
Mr. Mirzoyan added that the international plein air organized in Armenia had a position reaction among foreign artists: they were proud to see their works exhibited in the National Gallery of Armenia and happy to donate these paintings to the fund of the gallery.
Painter Artur Martirosyan painted 10 canvases during the nine days of the event. Speaking about these days, he said, “The sight of the Baltic Sea with its beauty inspired us to paint and create, enabling us to recognize the depths of that part of nature and reveal the spiritual layers."
The painter added that the plein air gave an opportunity to the participants to assess their own works and their power through cooperation with their foreign colleagues.
During his stay in Lithuania, Painter Martiros Badalyan, whose dream is to have a homeland that stretched from sea to sea, painted only the sea, which changed its colours every hour, becoming a source of inspiration for the artists.
Gayane Yeghiazaryan says international plein air events help reveal and evaluate their own in the works of foreigner, get familiarized with their approaches and make new professional discoveries. “Such initiatives are an attempt to combine national with modern and take the best from other nations,” said the painter.
The next international plein air will be organized in Vilnius.
