The Scientific Council of the Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) held its regular session, and according to tradition, ASPU Rector Srbuhi Gevorgyan congratulated the members of the Council who were born in the current month.
The first item on the agenda was the election of the Heads of the Chairs of Camera work, Artistic Photography and Social-Cultural Activities and of Physics and its Teaching Methods.
Chairperson of the Committee for Humanities Professions of the Scientific Council Gevorg Tadevosyan and member of the Committee for Natural Science Professions Gagik Demirkhanyan introduced the nominated candidates and their academic activities.
The Scientific Council also listened to the nominated candidates as they talked about the provisions stated in their proposed programs and the actions that they will take in their new terms of office. Based on the results of a closed, secret ballot, the Chair of Camera work, Artistic Photography and Social-Cultural Activities will continue to be headed by the only nominated candidate, acting Head of the Chair Ruben Yerzinkyan, and the Chair of Physics and its Teaching Methods will be headed by the current acting Head of the Chair Eduard Kokanyan.
The members of the Scientific Council also approved of Candidates of Psychological Sciences Ani Avagyan, Ani Khudoyan, Araksya Katunyan, Lilit Vardanyan, Candidates of Pedagogical Sciences Geghetsik Grigoryan, Candidates of Technical Sciences Arsen Nadaryan and Arusyak Kostanyan who are presented for the academic rank of Associate Professor. Associate Professor of the Chair of Fine Arts Sevada Sargsyan was elected to the position of Professor.
ASPU Vice-Rector for Education Mariam Ispiryan presented the next item on the agenda, that is, the process of organizing research activities at the ASPU and within the Scientific Council.
The Vice-Rector highlighted the fact that the ASPU, adhering to its adopted policy, carries out several initiatives in the areas of science and education, which helps enshrine continuous increase in qualitative development.
Ispiryan mentioned that the ASPU conducts research in different areas, one of which is participation in the programs funded by the Higher Education and Science Committee of the Republic of Armenia. Mariam Ispiryan presented the amounts of baseline funding programs of the Science Committee by years, the programs for the year 2023 and the 6 theme-based programs being funded for 2024-25. The target scientific programs for the year 2025 were also introduced to the Scientific Council.
The Vice-Rector for Education attached importance to the establishment of the Center for Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, emphasizing the fact that this is aimed at setting up state-of-the-art laboratories in the mentioned sector with the prospective aim of using those laboratories in the learning process.
In her speech, Mariam Ispiryan touched upon scientific conferences, publications completed in 2023, comparative data on the articles published in international peer-reviewed periodicals in 2021-23, articles published in international peer-reviewed periodicals, scientific journals, activities of professional councils, reflection on the procedure for performance evaluation of science specialists and more, as well as other topics related to science.
Summing up, the Vice-Recor talked about the factors impacting effectiveness of research activities at the ASPU, the process of internationalization of research at the ASPU, as well as the results of a survey conducted with professors and students for improvement of students’ research.
The Scientific Council considered satisfactory the organizing of research activities at the University, and in order to improve the quality of the process, the Council decided to introduce new criteria for assessment of research and ethics, procedures for incentivizing research and to conduct monitoring for assessment and improvement of quality of research. There will also be programs developed for professional development of the research capacities of professors, programs and technical resources will be introduced in order to verify the uniqueness of research and prevent plagiarism, etc.

During the discussion on current issues, the Scientific Council approved 8 topics for candidates and 1 topic for a PhD dissertation, as well as the changes proposed for 2 topics and academic supervisors. During the session, the Council also recommended the monograph “The Intellectual in the Novelization of Zabel Yesayan” by Professor of the Chair of Armenian New and Modern Literature and its Teaching Methods after Vache Partizuni and the “Harmonia-2” training manual by acting Head of the Chair of Music Education, Associate Professor Anna Harutyunyan which are presented for publication.
