On February 10, Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia Armen Ashotyan handed over awards to the winners of the “Best Student” competition.
This year, there were 39 winners from 18 higher education institutions (HEIs) in Armenia. Three of them represented Armenian State Pedagogical University. Sevada Sargsyan, a four-year student of the Faculty of History and Law, ASPU, came 2nd in the field of Social Science, and Anna Mkrtchyan, a four-year student of the same Faculty, took 3rd place in the field of Armenian Studies.
The winners received Certificates of Achievement and monetary awards in the amount of AMD 440 000 (1st place), AMD 228 500 (2nd place) and AMD 200 000 (3rd place).
Greeting the winning students, Minister Ashotyan said each HEI has its criteria for choosing the best students. He noted that three years ago, the Ministry, considering the importance of identifying and encouraging the best students in HEIs, initiated this annual prize-giving ceremony that features students from different educational institutions. “I am glad that we were able to choose 39 students from a total of 100 000 students. The winners were more persistent, consistent and courageous when they decided to apply for this competition. I believe that their example will serve as a model for our youth,” he said.
The competition has been held in Armenia since 2013 in the following fields: Natural Science, Humanities, Medicine, Social Science, Culture, Sports and Armenian Studies. The competition is open to 2nd and 4th year students who are enrolled in full-time Bachelor’s degree programmes and students who have completed the first sister of their Master's course in state and accredited higher educational institutions in Armenia.
The initial phase of the competition is conducted by the HEI. Winners are determined by totaling all points earned during the target year. If two or more candidates have the same number of points, the committee considers their academic achievements.
