On September 23, lecturers and students of the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geography organized a unique green event. With the slogan "100 students and Professors ahead of the University's 100th Anniversary", they cleaned the shores of Yerevan Lake from household waste and commercial trash, polyethylene and plastic waste, etc. Current environmental challenges, pollution and overexploitation have led to some environmental security issues looming over the lake’s ecosystem.
in a conversation with old.aspu.am, Ruzanna Sadoyan, Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geography, said the waste disposal problem is a serious challenge to humanity.
"The environmental event has educational and upbringing significance. By participating in this initiative, future teachers will instill in themselves and their students the basics of environmental education, the culture of keeping the environment clean," Ruzanna Sadoyan said. She hopes more events of the same format will be initiated in the future as the area cannot be cleaned up in one day or within the frames of one project.
Speaking about environmental issues, Ruzanna Sadoyan expressed concern that the accumulated waste can turn the lake into a swamp. In addition, neglect and mismanagement of various items that have turned into waste can affect nature in many ways and though various mechanisms can upset the ecological balance.
When students see the results of careless human activities and the polluted areas, next time they will not pollute the environment themselves. Yerevan Lake is an artificial reservoir used for irrigation, aesthetic and other purposes. Humans pollute what they have created. In addition, the lake is a shelter for many animal species registered in the Red Book," says Samvel Pipoyan, Head of the Chair of Biology, Chemistry and their Teaching Methods. He adds today's initiative seems to be a call to unite and take care of the environment and fight against pollution.
The event was organized with the support of Yerevan Municipality, with the participants being provided with necessary accessories for waste management and collection.
Let's add that event entitled "100 students and Professors ahead of the University's 100th Anniversary" ended with a practical lesson. After cleaning the area the students got acquainted with the species of fish in the lake, their differences, interactions between bird populations and fish.
