The works of students majoring in fashion design at Armenian State Pedagogical University were showcased at the University today.
The fashion show presented works designed by 25 undergraduate and graduate students of the University. They showcased a collection [consisting of 3-5 pieces of clothing] on each theme, demonstrating their mastery of skills and knowledge in fashion design. The models on the catwalk were students from the Department of Dance Pedagogy.
Lilit Melikyan and Aram Nikolyan, both lecturers at the Chair of Design, Decorative and Applied Arts, said the exhibition was an important step for future designers, especially given the fact that preparatory and organizational work had also been carried out by students: they had selected everything, starting from music to models.
“This is an environment where people are educated. Education is the basis of all professions. There are students here whom I expect to see in the professional arena,” Aram Nikoyan said adding that the exhibited collections deferred from one another. The most important was that the students were given an opportunity to get acquainted with fashion backstage and more.
Assistant Lilit Melikyan also highlighted the graduation fashion show and exhibition of student works, stressing that for a designer an examination in an auditorium creates few opportunities to present the ideas of an interesting and creative person.
When working with the students, Lilit Melikyan was guided by the slogan, “When you interfere, you often disturb.” She was sure that while preparing for such a big show students would show a more serious attitude towards the qualitative aspects of the work, starting from the quality of sewing to the choice of accessories. This was their last chance to imagine how they could plan and organize a professional fashion show.
“We want our students to have their unique way of thinking,” Lilit Melikyan said to old.aspu.am, adding that the collections also contained complicated and time-consuming garments created by the students after studying the works by various authors.
The works were judged by a professional committee led by Artur Armenyan, a designer and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts.
“Show is one thing, defense – another,” said Artur Armenyan. He added that he saw professionalism in the fashion show though it was the students’ first step into the world of real art. The professor added that the ASPU took a bold step by organizing such a show which shows the University’s serious approach and attitude towards the profession.
