The Student Cup, a student volleyball competition organized by the youth organization of the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) and Student Sports Federation, was held from April 30 to May 3.
Teams from eight Armenian universities, including that of Armenian State Pedagogical University, participated in the tournament dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Armenia's independence. The ASPU girls’ team became winner after three games. The team of Yerevan Brusov State University of Languages and Social Sciences came second followed by the team of Armenian State University of Economics.
On Wednesday, May 4, ASPU Rector Mirzakhanyan received the winning team to congratulate them on the victory.
During the meeting, the rector asked the team about the current problems in the field of Physical Education, then promised to pay more attention to the development of sports at the University, stressing that sport is of paramount importance in the world's best universities. “Many leading sports teams in the 21st century were formed at universities. You should continue training and keep your Cups,” Mr Mirzakhanyan stressed in his speech.
The team will continue training at the University’s educational centre in Aghavbadzor. Starting 2018, training will continue at the gym of School N57 which is equipped with the best training equipment and conditions.
Ruben Mirzakhanyan added that in the near future the ASPU team will compete with the teams of other countries, specifically that of Russia and the University’s partner universities in Europe.
Zara Petrosyan, the trainer of the ASPU volleyball team, says team game and spirit were important guarantees for the team’s victory: they stayed together and played together. Also the prizes and victories the team had had before the championship as well as consistent work ensured the thrill of victory.
