Auditorium named after great scientist Vagharshak Kosyan opens at ASPU

“How can we perpetuate the memory of a person? I think one of the best things we can do is to name an educational institution after that person. Dozens of students - future educators - will enter this auditorium every day. Later, they will tell their pupils with pride that they were educated in an auditorium named after the great linguist,” Ruben Mirzakhanyan, Rector of Armenia State Pedagogical University, said during the solemn opening of an auditorium named after Doctor of Philology Vagharshak Kosyan.

Speaking about Mr. Kosyan’s long-term activity at the ASPU, Mr. Mirakhanyan stressed that although specialists had repeatedly studied the professor’s scientific works, the most valuable manual for him remained a university textbook co-authored by Kosyan, Jahukyan, Aghayan and Abrahamyan.

The professor’s grandchild, Vaghashak Kosyan Jr., was given the honour to officially open the auditorium. Currently, he is studying at the ASPU.
The opening ceremony was followed by a scientific session dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Vagharshak Kosyan. The professor’s graduates from different academic years made speeches during the event.

“The academic degree and title found the right person corresponding their true meaning. Vagharshak Kosyan was a great educator and a leading linguist,” said Ayelita Dolukhanyan, Head of the Chair of Ancient and Medieval Armenian Literature, Doctor of Philology, a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences. She added that it was a great honor for her to be a student and a colleague of the great scientist.

Speaking about Vagharshak Kosyan’s academic and pedagogical legacy, Ayelita Dolukhanyan, especially stressed his love for students: he unselfishly encouraged and helped everyone. “He [Kosyan] appreciated kindness, punctuality, and decency in people. He had features decorating an Armenian, he loved his relatives, family and friends,” Professor Dolukhanyan said. She regretted that Professor Kosyan died in the most prosperous period of his academic activity, taking with him numerous scientific projects that remained unrealized.

The event was equally important for writer and publicist Razmik Davoyan. The future writer’s first meeting with Professor Kosyan was a happy and fatal accident, which predicted Mr. Davoyan’s future career path.

“In the present-day Internet age, knowledge is required everywhere. It eats human brains but the great scientist was able to present everything in an affordable mother tongue. He had a fragile personality and never showed his personal problems,” the writer said. Then he shared with the audience his memories about the scientist. Mr. Davoyan did not hide that he was grateful to Professor Kosyan for guiding him in the important period of life.

The scientist’s graduates of different years said that Vagharshak Kosyan was among the graduates of the Pedagogical University who had left a deep trace on the ASPU’s activity, created favorable conditions for young scientists, helped them self-express and move forward in science.

"He has educated hundreds of students, true devotees of Armenian language and literature, who are the heirs of his legacy. Not only do we feel grateful to our teacher, but we also convey one of his messages to our students – respect our great people and appreciate their work,” said Ashot Galstyan, Dean of the Faculty of Philology. He added that during the session, lecturers and students from various universities would try to present his weighty and valuable scientific merits.

The event dedicated to the scientist’s 90th university was also attended by his family members. Talking to old.aspu.am, the professor’s grandson – Vagharshak Kosyan Jr., said though he had not seen his grandfather, he kept and followed his most important advice which he heard from his parents – to be honest in every job.

“It is a great honor to bear the name of a scientist and a person who was loved by everyone. Therefore, before doing something I always try to uphold his good name and reputation,” Vagharshak Kosyan confessed.

The session continued in three branches, with the participants presenting professional reports.
