“When you meet one person with Autism, you’ve met one person with Autism,” Haykuhi Adamyan, Acting Director of the Republican Pedagogical-Psychological Center (RPPC) said on April 10 during an event entitled "Autism and Art".
The aim of the joint initiative by the RPPC, ASPU and the Faculty of Special and Inclusive Education was to reveal the connection between autism and art. It was held as part of events organized within the framework of the World Autism Awareness Day (observed on April 2).
Haykuhi Adamyan emphasizes the combination of autism and art. Many children with autism have difficulty communicating with other people and expressing their thoughts and ideas. These problems, she says, are often solved through art. “Art classes help them become more sociable. By allowing children to express their feelings through art, we create opportunity and open up doors [for them] to communicate with others,” Haykuhi Adamyan said and enumerated famous people with autism who used art to express themselves and conquered the world.
Her speech was followed by an interesting discussion on the topic.
Sevada Sargsyan, a lecturer at the Chair of Fine Art, spoke about art in the context of communication. Presenting the functions of fine art, the artist said this branch of art, which is returning to its primary function – that of communication and using its expressive function, can fully act as a means of communication.
Let us add that about 28 works of the artist will be exhibited at the Republican Pedagogical-Psychological Center for two years, providing visitors a unique opportunity to communicate with art.
Ara Hakobyan, Dean of the Faculty of Art Education, is sure that in case of any problem, art is healing and can bring peace.

ASPU lecturer Alvina Hayrapetyan, who also works with autistic children, presented a report on “Basics of Psychological Diagnosis through Drawing Therapy".
In her speech, she referred to the psychodiagnostic method of art-therapy and compared the paintings by normal and autistic children.
The students of the Faculty of Special and Inclusive Education also participated in the initiative aimed at raising public awareness of ASD needs. The latter involved the presentees in the “Learn More about Autism” online game, enriching their knowledge about autism.
At the end of the event, theater troupe of the Republican Pedagogical-Psychological Center presented a premiere of a song. They advised everyone to communicate, cooperate, not to avoid interacting with them and not to give up. "We are alike, you and I," the students said and expressed hope they will communicate as equals, without additional attention.
The event had a symbolic ending; the presentees created a work of art - one of Sevada Sargsyan's paintings.
Susanna Muradyan, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Special and Inclusive Education, hailed the initiative and expressed hope that children with autism will be included in public schools and will not be isolated from society.
