“The Light of Eternal Lamp,” a book by Paytsik Arapian-Galachian, a Lebanese-Armenian literary critic, a former editor of Zartonk (Awakening) daily, has been published in Beirut recently. The book is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Melkonian Educational Institute (MEI).
The book is full of photographs, memoirs and rich information.
The presentation of the book and a meeting with its author was initiated by the “Spyurk” (Diaspora) Scientific-Educational Centre and ASPU. The meeting was attended by educational and cultural figures and representatives of the MEI.
Professor Suren Danielyan, Director of the Spyurk Centre, who heads ASPU Chair of New and Modern Armenian Literature, highlighted the importance of Melkonian Educational Institute, its unique role and significance in the education system in Armenia, remembering once again Garabed and Krikor Melkonian brothers and other devotees.
The Professor stressed three problems in the literary and cultural life of Western Armenians – the fall of Aleppo, fate and the continuing story of Western Armenians in the Diaspora and Armenia, and the endless chain of schools and colleges, as a result of which Armenians become alienated from their Mother Tongue and roots every day.
Suren Danielyan emphasized the importance of the book, stressing that it is not only ‘finished material,’ but also a publication full of fighting spirit typical of its author who seeks to awaken the dormant elements of society with Melkonian’s bells.
The attendees also watched a short film about the MEI, staring from its establishment to thriving.
Later on, President of the Union of Journalists of Armenia, Astghik Gevorgyan, presented Paytsik Arapian-Galachian with the “Loyal to Profession” gold medal of the Union of Journalists of Armenia.
Paytsik Arapian-Galachian thanked everyone for the warm welcome and gave the attendees autographed books.
