“Photography is one of the specific branches of art, it is unique with its veracity about time and reality. It does not lie and sometimes sees people, things and phenomena in such a way that they become visible to viewers from a different and unexpected angle,” Professor Yura Khachatryan, DPhil in Literature and Arts, said during the opening of a photography exhibition at HayArt cultural centre.
The works of first-year BA and MA students majoring in art photography as well as about 80 photos taken by Honored Art Worker of Armenia, lecturer Samvel Sevada in eight months were put on display during the exhibition entitled “Beginning” which was organized by the Chair of
Camerawork, Artistic Photography and Socio-cultural Activities.
While Yura Khachatryan stressed that photography exhibitions do not open frequently in Armenia, he was delighted to see that young people continue the best traditions of Armenian photography. “This is a manifestation of unity of teachers and pupils, artists of older and younger generations, which shows space to viewers from an unexpected perspective and horizon. I am sure that we have future artists here, among these young people, who will bring honour and fame to our photography,” he said.
In his turn, ASPU lecturer Samvel Sevada said the exhibition was a unique report on the results of educational and creative teamwork. He added that they tried to add a breath of art to an ordinary shot and took photos of different landmarks in our homeland. “We often worked in the studio in parallel with lectures, took photos, painted portraits, still lifes, thematic and genre works. Students’ enthusiasm is boundless, which is also transmitted to professors, adding more responsibility,” he said.
Rita Sharoyan, Director of HayArt cultural centre considered consolidation on art photography an important move. She described Samvel Sevada as a teacher who does everything to transfer his knowledge to his pupils, make their works famous and shape aesthetic persons in them.
Poet and translator Hakob Movses considered the exhibition ‘an aesthetic feast’ which helps continue the glorious traditions of the Armenian school of photography.
He stressed that the photo art of Samvel Sevada and his pupils is switching from reportage to an authentic artistic value which is important nowadays.
“You may have heard the famous saying, “When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.” In this case, we can say the opposite, “When the teacher is ready, the student will appear.” Samvel Sevada shows people art, aesthetics, Armenian people, their faces and Armenian landscape.”
Hrant Tadevosyan, People's Artist of the Republic of Armenia, advised the beginner photographers to follow the advice of the master. Selecting a point of view is one of the most creative aspects of photography which shows the taste of the photographer, he added.
The exhibition was attended by Sergey Poghosyan, President of the National Association of Armenian Photographers, who noted that the photography exhibition reflects our reality - interesting, well-chiseled and with different thinking.
Mr Hakobyan handed over certificates to the participants of the exhibition and a photo album with works by 200 authors.
“Our beginning is promising. We shall live with this art,” Ani Mnatsakanyan, a first-year-student of the University, said to old.aspu.am. She then compared photography with the first love which filled her friends and herself.
The exhibition was also attended by lecturers, students, artists and art-loving guests. The exhibition will run until May 10 and will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., every day.
