Career orientation: Pupils are introduced to the profession of journalism

Choosing a well-fitting specialty has become an urgent and unavoidable matter for many pupils. In this regard, the Faculty of Culture of Armenian State Pedagogical University organizes regular meetings and discussions with schoolchildren in order to offer them career counseling and familiarize them with the specialties offered by the Faculty.

At the initiative of the Chair of TV and Radio Journalism, pupils of Yerevan State College of Culture and ASPU Basic College /High-School/ accompanied by their teachers visited the University on February 15.

Before the start of the meeting, the guests watched “Unvoiced Nobel Speeches” -film series by director Artur Bakhtamyan and script writer Levon Galstyan, who also heads the Chair of TV and Radio Journalism. This was followed by a discussion, with the future journalists and directors expressing their opinions about the film and making suggestions.

The pupils were also received by Gevorg Tadevosyan, Dean of the Faculty of Culture, who presented the history of the Faculty, its traditions, main directions and mission. The Dean expressed hope to see many of the pupils studying in the Faculty in the new academic year.
Speaking about the importance of career orientation, Levon Galstyan said it will be more efficient if the applicant is introduced to the specialties offered by the Faculty on the spot and receives immediate answers to his/her questions.

Artur Bakhtamyan, a lecturer of the same Chair, briefed the guests on the organization of practical journalism courses, achievements and essential skills acquired by future journalists during the years of study at the University. He stressed that thanks to the students they already have a website where one can find the articles and other publications of the Faculty students. Addressing the pupils, the lecturer stressed that they also have an opportunity to post their articles on the website before entering University. “I hope this meeting will produce the desired results. Wherever you go, remember that you should combine work with studies and surprise yourself at times seeing your personal and professional growth,” Mr Bakhtamyan said.

TV reporting is like eternal love, which one cannot leave or abandon. It is an unforced type of love which is very strong and is displayed in some way. This is a unique profession you fully devote yourself to, and your efforts and dedication are returned to you. Only those who have a clear mission, goal, aspiration and love are admitted to the Faculty,” said Sergo Yeritsyan, another lecturer of the Chair, who has written numerous books about broadcast journalism. Speaking about the requirements of the labor market, the Professor said given the competition in the field of journalism, one needs to be erudite to win the competition.

Sergo Yeritsyan stressed that the most qualified and experienced specialists work in the Faculty. “If you take from this pattern of stars the knowledge and experience that you need, you will become good journalists in the future, bearers of eternal love. We want to have worthy successors. The University is a real smithy where theoretical knowledge is combined with practical knowledge,” he stressed.
The pupils were also offered to participate in lectures if they wanted. During the visit, the guests also got acquainted with the Faculty and visited the TV studio after Armen Hovhannisyan.
