A two-day international conference entitled "Profile Analysis of Learners' Speech" kicked off at ASPU on October 15.
Welcoming the conference participants, ASPU Vice-Rector for Educational and Scientific Affairs Srbuhi Gevorgyan expressed hope that the conference would help the attendees develop their skills and have new achievements in the field of their activity. On behalf of the university rector, the vice-rector thanked the keynote speaker of the conference - renowned scientist, Doctor, Professor Wilhelm Grieshaber for agreeing to introduce the new method to the current and future educators. “It will give new insights into the problems of teaching German,” she stressed.
“We live in a world where people learn and study numerous languages, and we should be able to take up the challenge,” said Professor Melanya Astvatsatryan, Head of the Chair of Foreign Language Teaching Methods at ASPU. She added that the conference “Multilingualism in the Institutional Context. German as a Second Foreign Language” which was held in 2015 also aimed to address the challenges of the field. The professor added that the ‘method of profile analysis of learners' speech is introduced in Armenia for the first time: the method has been repeatedly used by its creators, including Professor Wilhelm Grieshaber.’
“There are multiple methods and it is time to show how the lesson planning is arranged within this method, what abilities we can acquire and what conclusions we will make. This is a real tool for teachers which will allow them to measure their language proficiency,” she said emphasizing the active participation of teachers from Yerevan and the regions in the conference.
Doctor Wilhelm Grieshaber is happy to be in Armenia again and participate in the conference. He thanked the Armenian teachers who conducted a survey among their students a month ago, and presented the results to the professor. “In their works I saw how people learn German here,” he said and expressed hope that during the two-day event the participants will be able to learn more about the essence of the method by applying it locally.
German teachers from Yerevan and regions stressed the importance of the conference too and expressed hope that it will be productive.
German specialist Holger Schmidt has been working in Armenia for five years now; he has been teaching German at school and college. He assured everyone that he has always performed language analysis in his work and has a programme to measure and assess students’ knowledge. Anyway, he believes that his participation in the conference and application of the new method will provide new opportunities for teaching German.
The conference was organized jointly by Armenian State Pedagogical University and the German Educational and Cultural Centre in Yerevan with the support of the German Embassy in Armenia.
