Today, a public lecture on the topic of “Preventing Juvenile Crime in the RA Police; rehabilitation justice approaches” was held at the Pedagogical University.
The Director of the Offenders' Rehabilitation Centre” SNCO of the RA Ministry of Justice Gayanei Hovakimyan expressed her acknowledgements for the University’s hospitality and noticed that the students formed the most important audience who actually needed this information.
“You are going to be the power and the pillar that will be supporting us. We aim at passing on our leading experience for you to be able to combine theoretical and practical knowledge in the process of studies”,Gayanei Hovakimyan stated.
Afterwards, the Deputy Head of the 3rd Division of the RA Police General Department of Criminal Investigation Arthur Vardanyan expressed his hope that the police system would be replenished also with the current students, as quality specialists were required in every sphere, everywhere.
“Service for juvenile affaires includes prevention and identification of criminal activities committed by or towards the juvenile. When executing prevention of juvenile crime, operations are conducted not only with the juvenile person that has committed the crime, but also with all other chains. The crux of the activities carried out with the juvenile is prevention”, said Artur Vardanyan. Besides, he stressed out that the educational-corrective activities conducted with the juvenile offenders were effective if they were conducted with the latter’s surrounding as well.
Likewise, the speaker mentioned regarding several programmes carried out by the RA Police that aimed at preventing juvenile crime, outlining the lack of community rehabilitation centers and presence of school inspectors at high-schools.
“The Effectiveness of the carried out activities is obvious; the number of crime is annually decreasing, however, we have still a lot to complete in this sphere”, Artur Vardanyan concluded.
“There will be no healthy community without healthy children therein; the preventive activities conducted with the juvenile start from schools. No one is born as a criminal, all of us might commit a crime, though”, said the Director of the “PH International” Armenian Office Mariam Martirosyan. In addition, she discussed the topic of preventing juvenile crime by means of legal socialization and rehabilitation justice approaches.
The specialist referred to rehabilitation justice and its ideology and noticed that all beneficiaries participate in that process.
The Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Education Psychology and Sociology Science and Postgraduate Affaires Sona Makichyan considered the cooperation effective and noticed that psychologists have a lot to do in the discussed sphere from the professional perspective.
Summing up, those present asked their questions to the specialists.
The lecture was organized by the ASPU Faculty of Education and Psychology and the RA MoJ “Offenders’ Rehabilitation Centre” SNCO jointly within the framework of the project by the UNICEF on “Effective Coordination, Cooperation and Public Awareness to Improve Accessibility of Juvenile Justice”.
