Forensic Psychiatric Examination in the Focus of Specialists

Within the scope of the 100th anniversary of establishment of the ASPU, and the 5th anniversary of the memorandum signed between the Pedagogical University and the RA Investigation Committee in the sphere of examinations, a round-table discussion headed “Forensic Psychiatric Examination; theory and practice” was organised by the initiative of the Faculty of Education Psychology and Sociology.

The Head of the University and the professoriate were present at the event, together with the representatives of the RA Investigation Committee, the RA Ministry of Justice Compulsory Enforcement Service, the RA MoJ Probation Service, the RA Examinations Bureau, and students.

The Acting Rector, Professor Srbouhi Gevorgyan outlined the importance of this round-table event and noticed that the sphere of forensic examinations as a direction in criminal procedure practice was in the process of generating important investigation toolkit for the development of expertise system. Likewise, she expressed her hope that the “Forensic Psychological Examination: theory and practice” round-table will raise the issues, which were currently existing in the process of forensic-psychological examination. The conducted analysis and the proposed new methodology would, in fact, simplify and replace the already expired methods and their application.

Next, the Acting Head of the Chair of Psychology, Candidate of Psychology, Associate Professor Levon Sargsyan presented the analysis of five years of examination activities held. He spoke about the types of examinations, the involvement of the expert-specialists from the Faculty therein, the number of cases by years, as well as examinations dynamics conducted both in the capital city as well as in regions.

In addition, Levon Sargsyan mentioned in his interview to the old.aspu.am that the start was difficult as the sphere of examinations was quite new. But on the basis of already established legal-psychological potential of the Pedagogical University it became possible to sign the memorandum and to develop effective cooperation.

Furthermore, he added that at present the specialists of the University were conducting separate complex, commission, as well as secondary forensic psychological examinations, and that there were 20 examination experts.

He also expressed his hope that more memorandums of cooperation would be signed with other RA Departments in near future, thus, expanding the scope of expertise.

What is more, the Head of the Chair of Psychology highlighted the importance to introduce “Legal Psychology” courses in postgraduate programmes so that in future they could also get involved in examination activities.

Later on, the Dean of the Faculty of Education Psychology and Sociology, Candidate of Psychology, Associate Professor Ruzanna Petrosyan spoke about forensics psychological examinations issues in Armenia.

The speaker observed that despite the tendency of increasing significance of forensic psychological examinations in the world, this sphere was still remaining unfulfilled in our country.
“Often the specialists are not able to conduct examinations, due to the lack of fundamental education or systemized professional knowledge of psychologists”.

In fact, Ruzanna Petrosyan is assured that expert -psychologists also need supporting knowledge and skills to correctly orient in examinations and to make well-grounded conclusions.

Furthermore, the speakers referred to peculiarities of complex forensic psychological examinations, and improvement of forensic psychological examinations in the area of suicides. As well as, they discussed the application of projective methods in the forensic psychological examination practice, the possible issues of experts, as well as forensic psychological examination development perspectives in Armenia.

The participants of the round-table made various proposals and interesting discussions, and concluded the event with a Q&A session.

And in fact, speaking about forensic-psychological examination in the area of suicides, Doctor of Psychology Kamo Vardanyan noticed that the forensic examination of suicides differed from other types as it was more of a creative process and an outcome of thinking. Moreover, according to him, Chair of Forensic Psychology should be opened at the Pedagogical University and the University should be made a special base for conducting such examinations.
