Armenia is to host the 17th Summit of the International Organization of La Francophonie (IOF) in 2018. A series of events have launched at Armenian State Pedagogical University which aim to strengthen cooperation and cultural dialogue between Francophone communities.
The game competition entitled “Questions from the French Culture” was the first such initiative which united students from different departments of the Faculty of Foreign Languages around the French language and French culture.
The three teams symbolizing the colors of the blue, white and red flag symbolized each other's knowledge of France, a friend of Armenia. The jury composed of the lecturers determined the 1st, 2nd and 3rd price winners and gave certificates and gifts to the teams.
“France is the warmest and friendliest country for us among the European countries. It is the cradle of European civilization,” said Tigran Mikaelyan, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages. He added that students were preparing for the competition with great enthusiasm.
Mr. Mikaelyan says that the University has planned a number of university-wide events. The essay contest “A Letter to My Beloved Frenchman” and the exhibition “We Recognize France through Cultural Symbols” will help students of different professions to recognize the country of love (France.)
Speaking to old.aspu.am, Tigran Mikaelyan said that the French culture is close to Armenians, so it should be spread among children since early age with the help of translated French literature.
Mira Karapetyan, a lecturer at the Chair of Romance and Germanic languages and the organizer of the game competition, says although the number of people interested in French has dropped, it is possible to restore interest in French language and the culture of that country with the help of such initiatives.
The participants were excited too. In the game, they competed for "liberty (blue), equality (white), fraternity (red)", the national motto of France.
