Inter-university student scientific conference kicks off at ASPU

The two-day inter-university scientific conference entitled “Modern Ecological Education” kicked off at the Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU).

Students of the ASPU, the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia and the Armenian National Agrarian University participated in the event organized through the combined efforts of the ASPU Chair of Ecology and Sustainable Development and the Student Scientific Society of the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geography.

Acting Head of the Chair of Ecology and Sustainable Development Serine Shogheryan attached importance to the scientific event and noted that it has brought together those who are interested in ecological education.

Associate Professor Shogheryan added that nowadays it is hard not to overestimate the role of ecological education in modern education and fully hopes that the two-day conference will help establish new contacts and discuss a number of ecological problems and that the first steps of students in science will foster exchange of experience.

Serine Shogheryan considers the mid-20th century the most active period of advocacy for ecological education that led to the emergence of the idea that nature protection is a priority. “Modern ecological education implies not only shaping of academic knowledge, but also capacity-building in practice and participatory experience of citizens in regard to nature protection. It is not by chance that ecological education is one of the primary directions of education in most countries,” Shogheryan stated.

President of the Student Scientific Society Mariam Sargsyan reminded that education is an ongoing and uninterrupted process and that one has to start by taking small steps when he or she fails and takes one step forward in education. She attached importance to the participation of the students of other universities in the conference and noted that most of the students will be delivering speeches for the first time ever.

On the first day of the inter-university scientific conference entitled “Modern Ecological Education”, the participants presented their respective researches, including the diversity of diurnal lepidopterans in the environs of Karenis village, the morphological attributes of several valuable Armenian sorts of a tomato, the key ecological issues related to Shaki Waterfall and the behavioral reactions of honeybees to food.

The positive and negative aspects contributing to tourism in Noratus village, assessment of the ecological situation of Debed River and its tributaries and other topics were also touched upon.

The speakers voiced hope that the presented works will become a material for new scientific research and will serve one of the control mechanisms for the ecological situation.

After a professional discussion and a sum-up of the results, the participants received their certificates, and one of the recipients was former student of Yerevan’s Mushegh Mkhoyan Basic School #68 Alek Manukyan, who received a certificate for participation in the scientific conference and for active participation in university life.

Vice-Rector for Education and Science, acting Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geography Naira Safaryan attached importance to the initiative of the ASPU, noting that the substantive discussion helped confirm that the event is a success.

The Vice-Rector reminded that science starts from general education, the bearers of which are the alumni of universities. She didn’t consider by chance the targets of the new criteria, the academic programs and project-based learning which push learners towards science when they are in school.

According to Head of the Chair of Biology, Chemistry and their Teaching Methods Samvel Pipoyan, the speeches stood out with scientific character and a multifaceted approach to ecological education.
The professor voiced hope that own observations and conclusions will be presented during the future events.

The inter-university conference will continue tomorrow.
