International Conference of Young Historians summed up

The International Conference of Young Historians, organized within the framework of cooperation between Yerevan State University, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia and the State Pedagogical University of Armenia, was summed up last week.

“If you want to reach heights, you should work hard and register results,” Acting Rector of ASPU Ashot Khoyetsyan said when handing over certificates to the conference participants.

The rector stressed that students have a lot to do in that direction. There is a need to do serious historical research and the key is in students’ hands.

“During conferences, students acquire not only knowledge, but also skills to work with science and technology topics and to present them. Given the current challenges, we can see how important a humanitarian specialist is in the ongoing processes,” Edgar Hovhannisyan, Dean of the Faculty of History and Social Sciences, said when congratulating students on Historians’ Day and hailing the initiative.

The historian stressed that against the backdrop of a changing society it is humanitarian specialists who keep the public consciousness balanced, clearly understanding the eternal concept ‘nation-homeland.’

Mr. Hovhannisyan thanked ASPU lecturer Gor Margaryan for coordinating the conference on a good level.

Edik Minasyan, Dean of the Faculty of History at YSU, said in his turn that is a good start, a good experience to follow.

The conference participants were also welcomed by Robert Ghazaryan, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies, who stressed the importance of thematic content of reports from ancient times to the modern era. “This is an interesting school that future scientists go through,” he stressed.

The traditional event dedicated to Historians’ Day was held from November 29 to December 3. It brought together representatives from Armenian universities - YSU, ASPU, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Armenian NAS, RAU, Gavar State University, Vanadzor State University, Armenian State University of Economics, and educational centers, as well young historians from abroad - Southern Federal University, and Moscow City Pedagogical Universities.

Discussions were held in different faculties of YSU, ASPU and in the Institute of Oriental Studies of the RA NAS. The work was carried out in several subgroups: Armenian history and sourceology (source science), archeology and ethnography, international relations and political science, oriental studies, culturology and art history, and world history.

ASPU students presented Tigran the Great’s image in painting (from San Stefano to Berlin), ancestor cult in the Armenian Highlands, peculiarities of the burial rite among the Yezidis of Armenia, stages of the development of the parliament, as well as constitutional  and legal preconditions for parliament evolution in Armenia.

The reports of future historians covered the Franco-Ottoman military,  political and trading relations in the XVI-XVIII centuries, the manifestations of Antisemitism in medieval Europe, the image and perceptions of nomads in Eastern Christian sources (in the 11th-15th centuries).
