A discussion entitled “Issues Related to Teaching of Armenian Civilization” was held at the ASPU Research Laboratory of Armenian Civilization Studies.
Representatives of scientific subdivisions of the University took part in the discussion, presenting the problems and methods of teaching Armenian Civilization in the system of higher education.
In his opening remarks, Ruben Safrastyan, an academician of the RA National Academy of Sciences and Head of the Research Laboratory of Armenian Civilization Studies, said that it is time to move from theory to practice when studying Armenian civilization and develop a methodology for teaching Armenian civilization.
The academician added that we are witnessing the formation of a new direction in science and emphasized the role of theoretical research of Armenian civilization in that context. “Armenian civilization should not be studied as a separate sphere; rather, it should be viewed as a sphere based on research of contemporary civilization,” he stressed.
Edgar Hovhannisyan, Dean of the Faculty of History and Law, stressed that the key to the study of Armenian civilization is to identify the factors contributing to the peculiarity of the Armenian civilization development.
Nelly Minasyan, Associate Professor at the Chair of World History and its Teaching Methods, who teaches “History and Theory of Civilizations,” said in turn, “"While teaching Armenian civilization, a number of principles have been taken into consideration: Armenian civilization has been studied in the context of world civilizations, paying attention to those civilizations with which Armenian civilization has had contacts and interaction.”
She thinks that the method of comparison should be applied in the study of Armenian civilization in order to single out the peculiarity of Armenian civilization among world civilizations and to show that Armenian civilization has unique principles and peculiarities: the teaching [of Armenian civilization] can be organized based on these principles and peculiarities.
Ernest Grioryan, a lecturer at the Chair of Philosophy and Logic, proposed to develop a unique methodology for teaching Armenian civilization, while Yurik Muradyan, a professor at the Chair of Geography and its Teaching Methods, highlighted the special role of Armenians, emphasizing the factor of the spread of Armenian culture.
Summarizing the results of the discussion Ruben Safrastyan mentioned that although this sphere exists in the educational system, there is still much to do in that direction and the results will give an opportunity to come up with an independent concept.
