A series of events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Professor Lavrenti Barseghyan have started at Armenian State Pedagogical University. The start of the events was announced with the opening of an auditorium [at the Faculty of Culture] which was named after the Professor.
The Chair of Museology (Museum Studies), Library Studies and Bibliography received a new quality under his leadership; the curricula and master's thesis topics were reviewed and changed, putting the scientific direction on the basis.
It is noteworthy that the auditorium bearing the name of the Professor was opened during his lifetime.
Upon the initiative of Lavrenti Barseghyan, his belongings were moved to the auditorium together with professional books collected over the years, which are supposed to add a new quality to the process of teaching.
Lavrenti Barseghyan also played an invaluable role in the creation of the ASPU Museum of History founded on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of ASPU. A temporary exhibition dedicated to the Professor’s life and activities opened at the Museum today, featuring photographs of the scientist, his personal belongings and medals.
Director of the Museum, Alvard Grigoryan says during his activity Lavrenti Barseghyan has always stressed the importance of professional training of young people and support to young specialists.
“As the head of the Chair, he attached great importance to practical courses and educational practice. During those years, students accompanied by lecturers have visited different museums and monuments in Armenia,” she added.
“He was a man whom I cannot describe in words. He was a friend for everyone, a teacher and supervisor for one purpose,” Ashot Piliposyan, Head of the Chair of Armenian History said confessing that it was Lavrenti Barseghyan who instilled in him respect and love for Armenian historical and cultural heritage.
Ara Tarverdyan, Director of the Service for the Protection of Historical Environment and Cultural Museum-Reservations SNCO, highlighted the organization of events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the scientist. He added that the events mark the beginning of a new tradition which aims to present the life and activities of our great people who have played a major role in maintaining the national heritage.
He excellently combined and managed the positions entrusted to him because the core of his activity was the public interest.
“He was a man of action and did not suffer from painful career,” ASPU Rector Ruben Mirzakhanyan said during the conference entitled “The Devotee of Armenian History and Culture.” He added that the museums founded by the Professor are still exceptional in their meaning and phenomenal in our public life. The Rector stressed that although it was not easy to work with him [Lavrenti Barseghyan] that was the key to his success.
Lavrenti Barseghyan's colleagues, his students of different years and people who had gained their first professional experience from the prominent scientist made reports during the conference.
“He educated a generation that is seriously engaged in the museum system of our country. There is no one who has worked with him and has not learned anything from him. He was a teacher who forced [others] to work and read on a regular basis,” said Serzhik Arakelyan, Advisor to the RA Minister of Culture. He assured everyone that he himself had learnt great things and values from the intellectual.
Nora Dayan, one of Lavrenti Barseghyan’s colleagues, presented memoirs about the Professor, emphasizing his conscious and consistent work thanks to which his colleagues developed a Barseghyan-like handwriting.
“He was a demanding and decisive person, at the same time forgiving and supportive in any issue,” she said. She added that he (Lavrenti Barseghyan) made a serious contribution to the professional development of each museum specialist.
