A roundtable discussion dedicated to the translation of works by prominent Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov was held at the “Pushkin Institute” - Russian Language Training and Testing Center at Armenian State Pedagogical University.
The scientific and cultural event was organized by Professor Yelena Mkhitaryan, Head of the Chair of Romance and Germanic Languages and Professor Ruzan Tadevosyan, head of the Chair of Foreign Literature.
Participating in the discussion were lecturers, BA and MA students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Faculty of Culture.
Lermontov's poetry, as well as comparative analyzes, were presented in Armenian, English and Spanish languages.
It was interesting to read and discuss different translations of the same work. Christine Bejanyan, Associate Professor of the Chair of Foreign Literature, and Gayane Vardaaryan, Assistant at the Chair of Television and Radio Journalism called the participants’ attention to different translations of Lermontov's famous poem "Parus" (The Sail). Ani Sahakyan, Associate Professor of the Chair of Romance and Germanic Languages, presented Lermontov's works in Spanish.
The attendees highly appreciated the sophisticated, but at the same time ungrateful work of translation, bringing examples of the best and most unsuccessful pieces of translation. They emphasized that the inexhaustible depth of Lermontov's poetry, the unmatched melody of the lines and the unique worldview still need to be presented in many other languages in a more colorful and accurate way.
