On September 25, a master class was organized for teachers of 54 schools that practise inclusive education in Yerevan. The master class was held on the sidelines of a working visit of experts from the University of Minnesota.
Together with their Armenian colleagues, the guest professors presented their joint experience in the field of inclusive education.
Talking to old.aspu.am, UNICEF Armenia’s Education Officer Alvard Poghosyan, said the meeting was aimed at presenting ‘the resources which have been developed by the two universities in question during the two years of cooperation.’ She hopes that with their active participation the teachers will enable Armenian and American colleagues to consider teachers' opinions in future programmes.
“The general education system in Armenia was expected to shift to the inclusive basis in 2018, but the process was postponed so that teachers can have more time to be armed with new methods and materials and develop their abilities to work with children with special education needs,” said the education specialist.
Four classes were held for the participants during which four professors from the University of Minnesota and one lecturer from ASPU jointly presented their working methods and techniques. They spoke about the concept and peculiarities of co-teaching, the methods and models used in co-teaching partnership. The participants also watched “Road to Inclusion” - a documentary about the reform progress of inclusive education in Armenia.
The lecturers of the University of Minnesota and Armenian State Pedagogical University will present their experience in inclusive education and jointly developed methods at Vanadzor State University.
In 2016, UNICEF brought together Armenian State Pedagogical University and the University of Minnesota to review current curricula on inclusive pedagogy and improve coursework and learning materials for future teachers.
