Rector of the Pedagogical University Rouben Mirzakhanyan had a meeting with the Heads of academic Chairs.
The Vice-Rector Mher Melick –Bakhshyan delivered his report about the final qualification examinations for distant-learning courses for the academic year 2016-2017, presenting the academic progress faculty by faculty.
During the meeting, the participation of the previous years’ graduates in the final examinations was also discussed, after which the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs summarized the examination results and noticed that the highest academic progress was registered at the Faculty of Culture, while the lowest was marked at the Faculty of Philology.
In addition, Mher Melick –Bakhshyan also referred to the hourly volume in academic year 2017-2018 and highlighted that in the former academic year the initial estimation of the lecturers’ workload was allowing them to further avoid new calculations and cut-downs.
Likewise, the Vice Rector added that in future it was planned to review the hours dedicated to the BA final papers; moreover, in the new academic year the final examinations would be substituted with students’ graduate papers.
Later on, the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Srbouhi Gevorgyan presented her report about the graduate papers for the academic year 2017-2018; she observed that the procedures of the postgraduate research work set by the Academic Board defined the Master’s Degree research work process, its organization and supervision, described the content and structure of the work, the composition of requested documents, their requirements, etc.
Similarly, the Vice-Rector emphasized the necessity of the paper review, noting that it was supposed to be more brief and actual, to clarify the set requirements, to bring them in line with the MA programme outcomes, the European and National sectorial quality framework characteristics.
“We should also pay attention to the re-structuring of generic and professional knowledge and skills and setting new assessment criteria”, Srbouhi Georgyan concluded.
Furthermore, during the meeting the ASPU Rector discussed with his co-workers the new concept of substituting the final examinations with graduate papers.
The Rector mentioned that suggestions in regards with the new format of examinations would be discussed and decisions would be submitted for approval at the upcoming Academic Board session.
“A list of topics for the BA and MA students’ graduate papers needs to be drafted by the Chairs, at the same time giving the students a chance to make their own proposals. Besides being an interesting topic it should also be an independent work all written and thought by the student; in order to ensure the last point, the University will install anti-plagiarism software starting from September”, added the Rector.
Once again Rouben Mirzakhanyan highlighted that the University had a pedagogical orientation, and teaching methods should to a wide extent be applied in the graduate papers.
