Memorandum signed between ASPU and University of Minnesota

A group of experts from the University of Minnesota is at Armenian State Pedagogical University for a working visit.

On the first day of the visit, the sides discussed and prepared the material of co-teaching while the focus groups specified topics of discussion. The guests also held working meetings. The sides signed a memorandum of understanding to promote cooperation in the areas of teaching and research.

The group was received by ASPU Rector Ruben Mirzakhanyan. The latter awarded the “Pedagogical University” medal to the guests - Renáta Tichá, Susan O'Conner, Christopher Johnstone and Brain Abbery. During the meeting, Mr. Mirzakhanyan expressed hope that establishment of a joint research clinic will strengthen cooperation between the two universities in question.

“After each research project the need arises to maintain ties and deepen the existing cooperation. As scientists, you will be interested in conducting research, studying the peculiarities of our country and comparing them with those of other countries,” Mr. Mirzakhanyan said. He added that the Armenian side is looking forward to the support of American colleagues in establishing the research clinic.

The representatives of the University of Minnesota thanked the ASPU rector for the award. They also thanked UNICEF and the ASPU for implementing the joint project and said they were satisfied with the results.

On September 28, the Armenian-American working group will sum up the results of the joint work during the “Road to Inclusion” symposium, proposing creation of an inclusive education manual consisting of 15 chapters, four practical webinars as well as review of the topics and content of the Inclusive Education course.

The group assured the Armenian side that the collaboration with the ASPU working group was effective and they also look for opportunities to continue the project. "Creation of the research clinic coincides with our vision of future cooperation with Armenian State Pedagogical University. We must confess that we also learned a lot from our Armenian colleagues,” the guests said.

They consider the Pedagogical University to be a research center in Armenia in the sphere of inclusive education and view the collaboration between the two universities in question as the best way to bring together specialists, conduct research and apply the results in practice.

The meeting was followed by co-teaching in an inclusive classroom setting. The Armenian and American specialists focused on peculiarities of inclusive education, response to intervention and other issues.

In 2016, with the support of UNICEF Armenia cooperation was established between Armenian State Pedagogical University and the University of Minnesota, which aims to convey international administrative experience to ASPU teaching staff, review educational programs of future teachers, and share theoretical and practical experience in the inclusive education system.
