The first interfaculty chess championship was held at the Pedagogical University with the participation of eight teams from the University’s ten faculties. The championship

consisted of seven rounds and was held under rules for rapid chess.
The team of the Faculty of History and Jurisprudence came first with 14 points, followed by the united team of the Faculties of Primary Education and Special Education which scored 11 points. The team representing the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geography was the third with 9 points.
The adjudicator of the tournament Samvel Misakyan, who is also a lecturer at the Chair of Chess and Sports, is convinced that the chess tournament [dated to the 90th anniversary of the University] will contribute to the development of chess in the University, stir up interest in this ancient game, help formation of the University’s chess team which will later represent the Pedagogical University in interuniversity championships.

The master of this wise game says chess is a royal game and any literate person, regardless of his age and profession, should know the rules of chess which trains one’s mind and logic and gives him an opportunity to better his concentration.
Mr Misakyan regrets to say that the number of students interested in chess is rather small. On behalf of all lecturers of the Chair, he said they are ready to teach chess to random students: all in all, chess is the model of life portrayed on the board.
The lecturer also informed the presentees that starting the second term, chess will be included as a subject in the

curriculum of the Faculty of Primary Education to arm future teachers of elementary schools with elementary knowledge about chess.
Later, chess will be included in all educational programs to fill the gap in secondary schools: chess is mainly taught by people who lack pedagogical education and teaching skills which results in numerous problems.
Before including chess in the list of primary subjects, chess-loving students can attend, optionally, chess lessons held in a modern and well-equipped auditorium twice a week.
