On 7 November 1922, the Armenian State Pedagogical Institute was born in Yerevan under the leadership of the distinguished pedagogue Arshavir Shavarshyan.
The first classes commenced in the campus of former Hripsimyan gymnasium on 27 November.

On 100th anniversary of the decease of the great Armenian illuminator Khachatur Abovyan the Pedagogical Institute was renamed after him and bears the great pedagogue’s name until today.

Since January 2000, by the decision of the Ministry of Science and Education the Pedagogical Institute was renamed into the Armenian State Pedagogical University after Khachatur Abovyan.

And today, the Pedagogical University is conducting a strategy aimed at international accreditation, besides it is included

in various regional and european projects to improve the quality of education.  Moreover, from now on the best students of the Pedagogical will have the opportunity to be invovled in students exchange programmes and to study at well-known American, European and Russian universities for some period.

In addition, the Pedagogical University grants considerable importance to internatioanl cooperation and it is not accidentaly that the jubilee event of the Pedagogical University marked the participation of the Chancellor of St. Clement of Ohrid University of Sofia Ivan Ilchyev, the President of the Southern Connecticut State University of the USA, our compatriot Mary Papazyan, the Chancellor of the National Pedagogical University named after Dragomanov in Ukrain, the President of the European Pedagogical Universities’ Chancellors Association Victor Andryushchenko, the Director of the Institute of Psychology of Sociology and Social Communication Vladimir Evtukh, the Chancellor of the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences Algidas Gayzutis, and delegations from the University of Lorrain in France and the City Pedagogical University in Moscow.

More to the point, the 11th President of the Southern Connecticut State University, Doctor Mary Papazyan, who has Armenian nationality, is assured that the work of the head of a university is as important as that of a state’s president. Emphasizing the role of the Pedagogical, Ms. Papazyan also mentioned, “Both of my Universities, the Pedagogical and the Southern Connecticut universities, started operating as pedagogical establishments, and then they expanded their scope of activities.

Education is the basis for establishment and development of the Armenian nation, and the Pedagogical is well aware of the significance of its mission. I am deeply grateful to accept the title of honorary Doctor and I am looking forward to our joint collaboration”.

In her turn, the Chancellor of the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences Algirdas Gaizutis, who was also awarded with the title of the Honorary Doctor, is on her first visit to

Armenia. She is absolutely astonished with the Biblical Ararat which makes her think about the eternally creating, struggling and surviving Armenian nation.

“The nation’s brains are its universities; its success is conditioned by the educational field. And I would also like to mention that our universities are quite similar as they both are currently in the new stage of reforms. I am proud for our cooperation and I am also pretty sure it will be very effective.”

In addition, Algirdas Gaizutis also expressed her will for every single day of those present be like the 20 years old Armenian brandy.

And last but not least, in the process of granting the medals, the guests, too, presented souvenirs to the Pedagogical University which will surely find their own place at the newly created museum of the University.
