The Memorial Day
07.12.2012

It’s been 24 years that on 7 December, the whole Armenian nation has been paying a tribute through various events to the victims of the 1998 destructive earthquake.

Each of those present kept a minute of silence and recalled all that they knew about the horrible earthquake.

The Student Council of the Faculty of Education Psychology and Sociology, in the face of the Vice President Aryusyak Gevorgyan, organized a matinee symbolizing the day, during which students made reports on the earthquake.

In her report headed “What did the earthquake of 7 December 1988 manifest?” Tatev Davtyan raised questions which had been of interest to everybody; Was it possible to foresee the Spitak earthquake? Was the seismic circumvention map of the Armenian SSR accurate? What was the real effect of the earthquake? Were the Fundamentals of Earthquake Engineering preserved? And did the construction quality correspond to the seismic requirements?

Further, in the following reports the students introduced the true and accurate numbers of victims, the injured, local and foreign rescuers, states and organizations that gave a helping hand.

Moreover, a separate description of events presented how the injured people were withdrawn from under the wreckages and what support was given to them.

Later on, after watching the documentary on the earthquake, the students also introduced the rebirth of the disaster zone, when strong measures were taken to fight against the  consequences, when the ruined villages and towns were restored, when the completely destroyed factories re-commenced operating, and when steps were made to rebuild apartments.

Sending a memorial speech to heaven, the students expressed their immense desire that no other building, no other construction was ruined, that every time, when the homecoming ribbons were cut, people would believe and cross the threshold with faith and belief knowing that never again would a building constructed by an Armenia constructor be ruined from the dreadful elements of nature.
