Let us learn lessons from the past and be informed
07.12.2012
Armenia commemorates the 24th anniversary of the Spitak earthquake on December 7, 2012. An event entitled “Earthquake Awareness and Preparedness” was organized at the

Pedagogical University within the framework of the course “Emergency Situations” which aimed at increasing students’ awareness of seismic hazards and risks.

“Hope should not become one’s beacon of salvation; we should have faith in our abilities and God. It is highly important that people undertake active measures to find salvation, they should never stop believing,” Perch Karapetyan, lecturer of the Chair of First Aid, Emergency and Civil Protection, said in his opening remarks.

Students of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics observed a minute's silence in memory of the earthquake victims.

During the meeting, the students received theoretical knowledge about the natural calamity [earthquake], spoke about its devastating consequences, prevention of possible hazards and self-defense measures.

“Soil is alive, and sometimes it goes out of control. Buildings are primarily designed to resist longitudinal and transverse waves. It is very important to know the peculiarities of the given structure. A person should be ready to resist tremors without panicking. Preparedness and awareness can be fatal for each of us,” said Mr Karapetyan.

At the end of the event, the students watched a film about emergency situations which was followed by a heated discussion.

The event was organized by the Student Scientific Society of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics.
