Scientific Session on Ecological Issues
21.12.2012
Within the framework of 90th anniversary of the Pedagogical University, the Department of Physical Geography of the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geography arranged a

scientific session on the general subject “Mountainous regions (geo-systems) as extreme habitations”, the chairmanship of the session was held by the Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geography Svetlana Hovakimyan.

The Director of the Scientific Research Center Kamo Vardanyan greeted those present, wishing them commentaries on great scientific thoughts, ideas, contradictions and healthy debates. “Scientific sessions have always been of great importance for the Pedagogical University. This is evidenced by the numerous conferences arranged on the 90th anniversary of the University. All the reports included in the scientific session are of utmost importance, actual and have scientific significance”, he added.

Likewise, the Head of the Department of Economy and its Teaching Methods Maxim Sargsyan and the Dean of the Faculty of History and Law Edick Gevorgyan highlighted the importance of arranging the conferences. Besides, the latter was sorry to observe the fact that the students interest towards this field of science has considerably reduced.

“The nature gives us an opportunity to live with its inexhaustible supplies. Geography is in fact the most practical field of science; in fact, it has big strategic significance especially for Armenians. Today, the best experts in this field are working at the Pedagogical, these are professionals who increase interest towards this science through such sessions and their activities.”

Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor Gevorg Karapetyan presented the “Risk Characteristics of Economic Use of Mountainous Regions, their Prediction and Management Problems” (RA example).

In addition, the Geographer underlined in his report the following, “We need to separate the acceptable, zero and hyper-risk concepts. Likewise, the classification of local, regional and global risks is also important according their origin, scale of expression and the damages caused. Besides, for the mountainous areas it is not only important to state the risk consequences, but also to make these risks as manageable as possible due to the predications.”

Further on, Gevorg Karapetyan suggested that while assessing the risks, the ethno-cultural and social-economic

conditions, their relations, as well as the level of the residents’ protection should be taken into account.

More to the point, in his report on “The current ecological description of the planet Earth, the positive and negative trends from the UNO Rio+20 Summit perspective” the Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor Karine Danielyan noticed that the planet Earth is in an ecological crisis, it throws back like a boomerang twice what human beings throw to the Earth.

The leading specialist in the filed emphasized the role of the state in solving ecological problems, urged to change attitude towards ecology, to fight against dangers, thus avoiding the ecological planet neutralization.

Next, the report on the subject of “The sweet water supplies, the rational utilization of water objects and protection problems in RA” by Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor Boris Mnatsakanyan made a power point presentation of the water supplies on the Earth, also referred to the structure of the RA water supply as of 2012, useable water, strategic water resources, strategic and national water supplies.

Afterwards, the Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor Ashot Khoyetsyan introduced his report on the subject “Landscapes degradation and desertification trends and mitigation issues in RA”.

He spoke about the philosophical aspects of the global conceptions of landscape mitigation and desertification, natural

and social mechanisms, degradation and desertification paradigm specifications, modern landscape areas, Õ¡Ö€Õ«Õ¤Õ¡ÕµÕ¶Õ¸Ö‚Õ©ÕµÕ¡Õ¶ trends and their evaluation.

To conclude, the scientific session activities were summarized with the report by the Candidate of Geographical Sciences Nerses Samvelyan and the Candidate of Agricultural Sciences Samvel Kroyan. They delivered reports on the subject “RA biogeographical features and modern problems of biodiversity protection”.

And last but not least, the specialists also discussed the current state of the protected areas and suggested that they should be expanded and if necessary, their status should be reviewed.
