Unprecedented Exhibition Opens at Artists’ Union of Armenia
24.12.2012
An unprecedented exhibition dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) opened at the Artists’ Union of Armenia on December 24.

About 300 works of the founders, lecturers, students and graduates of the Art Department of the Faculty of Art Education were showcased in the exhibition halls of the Union.
Among the exhibits one could see paintings, graphic works, examples of decorative and applied arts, ceramic products, wooden items, metal jewelry, etc.

The event was attended by ASPU Rector Rouben Mirzakhanyan, Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotyan, Director of the National Gallery, painter and professor Paravon Mirzoyan, artist Levon Kojoyan and representatives of the art society.

Greeting the attendees, Armen Ashotyan said that the exhibition was the adornment of the jubilee celebrations marking the University’s anniversary.

“We always speak about the importance of knowledge and knowledge-based society. Knowledge alone is a naked and useless weapon in the hands of a person; it does not have a high value.

Culture and education are the two faces of the same medal: an educated person should also stand out with his/her cultural upbringing. It is difficult to separate or demarcate culture and education, knowledge and value; they are interrelated and interwoven, they get a second breath from each other.

I am glad to say that one of the educational institutions in the country, the Pedagogical University, which is also a cultural establishment, is presenting to the public the works of distinguished artists and its talented students,” said the Minister.

In his turn, Honoured Art Worker, Professor Arkadi Shekunts emphasized that the aesthetic education is one of the most

important prerequisites ensuring multilateral and comprehensive development of a person.

It is not accidental that centuries ago painting was one of the three major subjects taught at the universities of Sanahin, Tatev and Gladzor. The Pedagogical University also attaches great importance to art and educates specialists of the field.

In his speech, Painter Levon Kojoyan stressed that there are numerous talented young people in Armenia. He emphasized the need to restore the old tradition when the works of students were exhibited in the same hall side by side with the works of masters.

The event coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Art Department. To this end, the works of great painters and founders of the department Karapet Minasyan, Hovhannes Zardaryan, Ghukas Chubaryan, Eduard Isabekyan, Hovhannes Harutyunyan, Vahram Khachikyan, Suren Safaryan and Tigran Simonyan were also displayed at the exhibition.

Along with the works of the great masters, one could also see and admire the canvases of the University’s lecturers [on the first floor of the Artists’ Union], as well as the works of the University’s graduates and students [on the second floor].

Also, the works of honoured artists Zakhar Khachatryan and Levon Kojoyan were showcased at the exhibition.
The exhibition will run till December 27.
