Prime Minister’s order executed: Salaries at Pedagogical University increased by 40 percent
10.01.2013
The Governing Council of the Armenian State Pedagogical University has convened its recurrent sitting at the head of Armenia’s Prime Minister and Chairman of the University’s

 Governing Council Tigran Sargsyan.

Before proceeding to the meeting agenda, the country’s premier congratulated the attendees on the New Year and Christmas holidays. Mr Sargsyan expressed the hope that 2013 would be a year of success and achievements for the Pedagogical University. “We shall be proud to have participated in the implementation of reforms which will be clearly visible to the students and public,” said the head of the Armenian government.

Then, Tigran Sargsyan asked the ASPU Rector about his errand [issued on September 25, 2012] concerning the advancement in salaries for University lecturers.

ASPU Rector Rouben Mirzakhanyan said that starting January 1, 2013 the salaries had been increased by 40 percent. Then he substantiated the reasons for the increase.

The Rector reminded the presentees that in the last two years the salaries of the University lecturers had been increased by 80 percent through a series of cost-cutting measures.

“If in 2010 the University spent AMD 690 million on the construction work, in 2012 the expenditures totaled AMD 280 million. In 2010 office expenses amounted to AMD 60 million, while in 2012 they made AMD 22 mln. This year we are switching to the electronic control system and we plan to reduce the expenses to AMD 13 mln.

Business expenses totaled AMD 40 mln in 2010, while in 2012 they made AMD 22 mln. This year, the costs will be reduced to AMD 13 mln.  AMD 4 mln was spent on the lease of transport means in 2012 against the 19 mln spent in 2010. We shall not spend any sums in this direction in 2013 as the University already has its own vehicles.  I can continue enumerating the work carried out in these years.

However, I would like to officially announce that the Pedagogical University has not received any financial assistance from

the state budget for increasing the salaries.

I want to add that we have also received financial and technical support from different international projects. I believe that the priority of the University’s policy should be to further increase the salaries of its lecturers,” said Mr Mirzakhanyan.

“This is a just incentive. If we are fighting against shadow revenues, it is necessary to provide normal income for lecturers which will help reduce the negative risks,” the Prime Minister said in his turn.

The attendees also heard a report on the University’s activity in 2012 and the draft budget for 2013.
