Rector of Armenian State Pedagogical University, Rouben Mirzakhanyan, today handed over certificates and prizes to the winners of the Inter-university Chess Championship.

After summarizing the results of women's tournament, Ani Hovhannisyan, an employee of the University Museum, took the first place with two points. Librarian Siroush Aslizyan, and lecturer of the Chair of Native Language and its Teaching Methods after Ashot Ter-Grigoryan, Eva Mnatsakanyan, came second and third respectively.

Congratulating the winners, International Grandmaster and Head of the Chair of Chess and Sports, Smbat Lputyan, noted that as a friendly sport, chess helps strengthen and warmify the relations between the employees.
Tournament referee Samvel Misakyan, a lecturer of the Chair of Chess and Sports, is convinced that similar tournaments increase the interest towards the royal game. “The Pedagogical University is the only university in Armenia where chess is included in the curricula. Chess classes are held for our students twice a week. I do believe that the classes will help train their minds, logic, intellectual skills, at the same time promoting the quality of education," he said.
Last year, the first inner-university chess championship was held at the Pedagogical University which featured eight teams from the ten faculties. In the near future the University’s chess team will participate in inter-university championships.
The Inter-university Chess Championship was organized at the initiative of the Chair of Chess and Sports and Trade Union.
