ASPU Representatives Visit Haghtanak Park
09.05.2013
Mathematician Davit Saribekyan, a lecturer of Armenian State Pedagogical University, went to the battlefield in 1943.  Two years later he was wounded but returned to his

Homeland following the hard-won victory over the enemy.

“For eight years in a row I chaired the ASPU Board of War Veterans,” Davit Saribekyan said with love and pride and continued to tell the memories of those years.

Vemir Simonyan, another participant of the war, vaguely remembers the years spent on the front. His memories revive especially during the May 9 celebrations when he meets his veteran friends in Haghtanak (Victory) Park in Yerevan. They meet in the same venue every year to celebrate May 9 triple holiday. On this day they seem to be experiencing the joy of victory anew.

Armenia’s top brass led by Prime Minister, representatives of diplomatic missions, members of political parties, veterans of the Great Patriotic War and ordinary citizens today visited Haghtanak Park to mark the triple holiday in the country. May is a special month for Armenian people. The victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, known as the Great Patriotic War, the formation of Karabakh’s Defense Army and the Liberation of Shushi are celebrated annually on May 9.

The administration of Armenian State Pedagogical University, its students and lecturers also visited Haghtanak Park to pay homage to the memory of the fallen soldiers. Before heading for the park the group laid a wreath at the Memorial to the Artsakh War heroes near the Pedagogical University.

Arriving at Haghtanak Park, the University representatives laid a wreath at the Eternal Flame and bowed their heads in a moment of silence for the victims.

Edik Gevorgyan, Dean of the Faculty of History and Jurisprudence, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor, says he is proud to see people, especially young ones, hurrying to the park to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers. “In order to perpetuate victories, we should educate the coming generations with the spirit of those victories, making them bearers and custodians of these victories. The Pedagogical University has its important contribution to the mission of educating active citizens and arming them with profound knowledge and national consciousness,” he said.
