Laboratory under the Open Sky
10.09.2013

Recently, second-year MA students of Armenian State Pedagogical University [specializing in Biology] underwent a practical training in Ararat and Vayots Dzor marzes (provinces).

At the head of Professor Samvel Pipoyan, Doctor of Biological Sciences, the students carried out a variety of fieldwork on the Arpa River Valley and in the neighbouring areas of Noravank and Khor Virap. Also, they took botanical and entomological samples in order to study and identify the biodiversity of the given areas and determine their classification grouping.  Prior to the practice, the students had been informed about the peculiarities of fieldwork and methods of entomological collection and sampling; they had brought with them insect collecting supplies, boxes, pincers and nets.

The collected insects will later undergo laboratory studies and be classified based on the results of the sampling.

The aim of the practice was to familiarize the students with the characteristics of flora and fauna typical of semi-desert and mountainous prairies and river valleys.
The students also took samples of plants of the aforesaid areas.

Also, the students visited the Cave of Birds, a cave complex in Arpa River Valley, and the church complexes of Noravank and Khor Virap. On the way to Noravank they saw the entrance to Magili Cave and got acquainted with the geological history of caves and Noravank canyon.
