The teaching-professorial team of the Pedagogical University, together with the PhD and MA students, made a visit to one of the military units in Ararat within the framework of the
RA Government programme “Survey on the Assessment of Soldiers’ Educational Needs and Implementation of Educational Programmes at RA AF Military Units”.
About 200 soldiers out of the 400 serving in the Ararat military unit expressed will to participate in the programme.
On the first day of the visit the specialists made a small research on the level of the soldiers’ preparedness on each subject, and based on those results the further distribution into groups was made.
Avetis Varosyan, a conditioned soldier, chose the courses of Mathematics, English and Informatics. He was happily surprised to hear about the programme; “I never expected to come across such courses which would satisfy soldiers’ educational needs. I think it’s still early to speak about the results as the programme is on its initial stage for now, but I am pretty sure it will successfully serve its purpose, and the soldiers, , will be able to study at any educational institution upon getting demobilized,” says Avetis Varosyan.
The head of the University’s Strategic Management Department, Rita Gevorgyan, while speaking with us, informs that especially active work will be practiced in those groups which have the weakest level of preparedness. “I am assured that they will soon obtain the amount of knowledge, which has been projected by the educational plan.”
The private soldier Aramayis Hakobyan learnt about the programme only two weeks ago. Today he starts the programme with the first lesson of History. As a future historian he is especially willing to bring to mind his knowledge on History. As he mentions, the programme brings a pleasant change to the soldiers’ everyday routine. “I think above all, this is a great opportunity particularly for those soldiers who are just going to apply for an educational establishment. It is rather uneasy to get admitted to a university only thanks to a couple-of-hours trainings; while this is not as much a training as it is a preparatory stage for them”, mentions Aramayis.
However, the Head of the Department of Mathematics and Elementary Teaching Methods of the Faculty of Primary Education, Haykouhi Haroutyunyan does not consider the soldiers’ level of preparedness really high; nonetheless, she outlines the importance of their desire and readiness to study. “We are not going to make miracles in a two-month period; we prepared quite a realistic programme after the successful mastering of which the applicants will overcome at least the lowest admission mark.”
Tatevik Haroutyunyan is a postgraduate student at the Faculty of History and Law; her participation in the programme is marked with great excitement. “During the first lesson we got acquainted with the professional preferences of the soldiers, and afterwards they got introduced with the preface to the subject they chose. The soldiers are pretty much energized and say that despite the lack of time they will manage to get prepared for the university admissions”.
Let us remind once again that the RA Government program aims to make a survey on the soldiers abilities and preferences, skills and competences towards education during their last months on service, also to reveal their disposition to continue studies, and in addition, to project the list of requirements for each soldier and to train them to continue education at RA universities, primary or secondary professional educational institutions.
