The renowned historian of Armenia, the Head of the Department of History of Armenia of the Armenian State Pedagogical University after Kh. Abovyan, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Mher Karapetyan passed away at the age of 74. All of his conscious life was connected with the Pedagogical University.
M. Karapetyan was born in a teacher’s family in Yerevan on 11 December 1939.
In 1962 he graduated from the Armenian State Pedagogical University after Kh. Abovyan, the Faculty of History and Linguistics, after which he worked at the secondary school of Janfida in Hoktemberyan region for one year.
In 1964, he was admitted to the full-time PhD courses at the Pedagogical University with the specialization of History of Armenia.
From 1967-1975, Mr. Karapetyan held the position of the Academic Secretary of the institute.
In 1972 he defended his thesis and received the academic level of PhD in History.
From 1975- 1995 he was an Associate Professor on the Department of History of Armenia.
In 1996 he defended his doctoral dissertation and was conferred on the title of Professor.
Since 1997 till our days he was the head of the Department of History of Armenia.
Moreover, M. Karapetyan is the author of around 100 scientific and academic-methodological works, ten of which are monographs and manuals. His works refer to such issues as the Armenian national-liberation movement and the history and chronology of the Armenian Genocide.
In addition, a large number of PhD students and applicants defended their thesis under M. Karapetyan’s supervision. He was a very popular lecturer and a cordial interlocutor for both students and lecturers. M. Karapetyan was also the member of the Professional Councils of History of Armenia of the Supreme Certifying Commission of the Pedagogical University and the RA NAS History Institute. For many years he ran the activities of the Scientific and Academic-Methodological Committee of the Pedagogical University Academic Council.
M. Karapetyan was awarded the Movses Khorenatsi and the Khachatur Abovyan medals, and the Frityof Nansen medal.
The memory of M. Karapetyan will remain in the hearts of those who knew him forever.
