It is impossible to learn French without live speech

It is the second time the international month of French documentaries has been held in the Republic of Armenia. In collaboration with the Department of Romance Languages,

Faculty of Foreign Languages, Constance Rubier who cooperates with Alliance Française in Armenia, organized review and discussion of French documentaries at the Faculty.

With the view of spreading the French language and Francophone culture, the organizers of the discussion have initiated a number of cultural events. The screening of French documentaries is held annually in November with the participation of at least 50 countries. Institutions of higher education have been involved in the event for the first time this year.

The film “To Be and To Have,” a famous French documentary shot in 2002, was screened for the students of the Pedagogical University. The film tells about a small rural school, organization of the learning process and methods applied during the course.

“The choice of the film was not accidental; many of the students will become teachers in the future, and the film will attract them from the pedagogical point of view. The students have the opportunity to observe different teaching methods and apply them in the future in the educational process. They can also draw parallels between the current educational system and the educational system presented in the film,” said Constance Rubier.

Madlena Ghazaryan, lecturer of the Department of Romance Languages, stresses the importance of cultural events, which she says, give students an opportunity to listen to live speech. “Language is a means of communication which should be examined in the appropriate environment. Unfortunately, today we are deprived of this opportunity. It is important to create an appropriate environment; it is impossible to learn French without live speech, only with textbooks and grammar,” she said.

She added that despite its great efforts, Armenia is not a Francophone country yet. Similar events stir up interest in and love towards the given culture, and you become its apologist. The lecturer believes that similar events will also increase the number of people interested in French.
