“To Be Informed” is the Only Means to Fight against AIDS
03.12.2013
“To Be Informed” –with this motto and with the symbolizing red ribbon the sophomores of the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geography marked the 1st of December as the

 World AIDS Day.

The students delivered reports referring to the characteristic peculiarities typical to HIV-AIDS, its ways of transmission, as well as the preventing and controlling measures.

Besides, the students also presented the statistics of the spread of disease in the recent years and observed that a sharp increase of the number of the carriers of the infection has been registered.

All those present at the event, shared the opinion that “Everybody is equal for the disease,” after which they were introduced with the most eminent figures in a variety of spheres who passed away because of the AIDS.

Among those present at the event were the Dean of the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geography Ms. Svetlana Hovakimyan together with the Deputy Dean of Science and Postgraduate Education Vardouhi Hovsepyan, and students.

“Unfortunately, in traditional Armenian families sex education goes by the wayside; at schools too it is not on the list of most urgent topics. Thus, students get acquainted with these subjects already at the universities in the scope of diverse initiatives or at some classes; as for the sudden and unconscious infection cases, it is because of the unawareness,” mentioned Ms. Svetlana Hovakimyan and added that in the future the Faculty would refer to those topics on a more scientific level and by organizing a special  symposium.

In addition, under the joint initiative of the Red Cross Armenia and the ASPU Student Council, booklets providing information about the HIV and AIDS were distributed to the participants of the event.

And last but not least, we would like to mention that by the initiative of the World Healthcare Organization, 1st of December is dedicated to the World AIDS Day.
