Those who are aware of natural hazards are protected against them
05.12.2013
The Chair of First Aid, Emergency Situations and Civil Protection of Armenian State Pedagogical University today organized an open lesson dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the

Spitak earthquake. The aim of the lesson was to inform the presentees about the causes of natural disasters, their possible consequences and measures that can be taken to eliminate or mitigate the disruptive impacts of a natural disaster.

The students observed a minute's silence in memory of the earthquake victims. Then they watched a film about emergency situations.

Through video presentations the students defined an earthquake, spoke about the major earthquakes that occurred in Armenia and other countries of the world in the last century, referred to the causes of the devastating earthquake in Spitak, its aftermath and people's behavior.

They also drew parallels between the earthquakes in Spitak and Loma Prieta [also known as the Quake of '89] and stressed that human losses can be reduced in earthquakes if people are armed with the corresponding knowledge.

Hakob Grigoryan, Acting Head of the Chair of First Aid, Emergency Situations and Civil Protection, reminded that Armenia is situated in a seismically active zone; therefore it is important to raise public awareness and prepare people for new catastrophes.

This was followed by a question-and-answer session, with the participants dwelling on the aftershocks and secondary effects of earthquakes. The open lesson was conducted by Lecturer Perch Karapetyan.
