The use of contour maps at secondary schools is very important as they not only develop the visual perception but also stimulate geographical thinking; as a result the theoretical

material is examined thus improving mastering the subject.

Taking into consideration the suggestions made during the teachers’ trainings and the necessity to make the geography classes more up-to-date and targeted, the Pedagogical University’s Department of Socio-Economic Geography and Geography Teaching Methods developed a package of practical activities with contour maps in compliance with the 9th grade curriculum of “Geography” to be introduced at the RA secondary schools.

“Pedagogical experience shows that individual perception of information and further keeping it in mind is developed among learners, as well as their creative approach towards the subject is simultaneously demonstrated. The combination of the grid and the objects reflected on the map contribute to the development of special perception, discovery and understanding the regular and reciprocal links,” the Head of the Department Mr. Ashot Ajamoghlyan mentioned in his interview to the old.aspu.am.

Further on, the computer cartographer of the Department of Socio-Economic Geography and Geography Teaching Methods Mr. Tigran Babayan in his turn notices that the given work forms the culture for the application of the mapping rules and conventional signs that is strongly required in today’s information environment.

The specialists agree that when working on the text of the maps the correct spelling of the location names automatically comes out keeping in mind their accurate positioning on the coordination grid. Generating maps, colored description of phenomena will foster understanding logical links and development of aesthetic taste.

In addition, maps are processed in accordance with the curriculum; you may find the maps on the official website of the University, in the section “Contour Maps”.

And last but not least, the corresponding contour maps will also be further provided to the other classes.
